Shirley Edna Glenn

Shirley Edna Glenn, daughter pf the late Reverend Ridgley W. Coates and Edna Savoy Coates was born July 20, 1925 in Baltimore, Maryland. Shirley answered God’s final call on Friday, August 21, 2020 at Washington Hospital Center, after a lengthy illness. Shirley married the late Ulysses Garrett in 1949 and God blessed this union with two sons: Ulysses Garrett, Jr. and Rickey Clinton Garrett. She moved to Washington, D C. following her second married to Harry Milton Glenn. They were blessed with a son: Robert “Bobby” Milton Glenn. Milton and Bobby preceded her in death. She lovingly and faithfully cared for Bobby until God called him home in 2016. Shirley graduated from Douglas High School and from Cortez Peters Business School in Baltimore, MD. She was employed in retail for a period of time and retired after twenty-three (23) years from the Labor Department. Shirley accepted God at an early age and was an active, baptized long-time member of Full Gospel Baptist Tabernacle in Catonsville, MD. She joined the First Baptist Church family on November 7, 1965 by Christian Experience under the pastorate of the late Reverend R. Lavelle Tucker. She was a member of the Intercessory Prayer Ministry; First Senior Center where she was a member of the Happy Warriors Ministry. She attended the Adult Bible Class and prayer services. Shirley was on numerous committees and worked willingly. She was also a member of Circle Ministry Joshua. She remained active until her health status changed, but her love for God and His goodness to her stayed strong! Shirley loved the Lord and leaned on His promises. She enjoyed listening to Gospel music. She enjoyed traveling; going on cruises; family gatherings and celebrations. She was the family matriarch. She loved family! Many of us have a beautiful piece of ceramic she made. Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, two sons: Ulysses Garrett, Jr. (Susan) of Baltimore, MD; Rickey Garrett of Washington, DC; one sister: Harriet Hines (Dwight) of Catonsville, MD; one brother: Norwood (Ted) Coates of Catonsville, MD. Three grandchildren: Sheila Garrett of Shrewsburg, PA; Ulysses Garrett, III of Hyattsville, MD; Keah Mason of Waldorf, MD. Two greatgrandchildren: Synye Carter and Dameon R. Carter of Shrewsburg, PA; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
