Norma Olga Augusta Nembhard

Our beloved mother, Norma Olga Augusta Nembhard née Pitts, age 88, passed away from us, following her battle with the complications from COVID-19. She passed peacefully and was surrounded by her family; some present with her and others virtually. Along with the two children of her youth, and the union in marriage to Mr. Henry Nembhard that produced three children, she was blessed with five children. Her children, (Sylvia Jean Donester née Franklin, Audrey Marie Gillette née Franklin, Stephen Wayne Nembhard Sr., Carla Olive Gardner née Nembhard, and Dwight Ian Nembhard), will miss her dearly. Mom will be lovingly remembered by; her 21 grandchildren “Pini weenies” and 12 great grand-children; her “daughters”- in law, (Jessica Gordon Nembhard, Marnie Santana Nembhard, Pastora Melgar Nembhard, and Lydia Nembhard Tyner); her “adopted” daughter, Gail Robateau McKenzie; mom’s brother, Wesley Bede Augustus Pitts Sr. J.P., sisters, Stella Erica Augusta Ledlon née Pitts and Haidee Megan Augusta Pitts; her sisters-in- law, (Valda I. Pitts, Sylvia Jean Pitts, Rosita Pitts, and Myrna Doreen Pitts); her dear nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Mom was predeceased by her parents Roderick and Ethlin Pitts, five brothers and three sisters, (Randolph, Harold, Edward “Ned”, Lionel “Bian”, Bernard “BQ”, Sylvia Jean, Kathleen Maude and Yvonne Pitts); Sisters-in-law, Louise Pitts and Leonie Pitts; Brother-in-law; George Ledlon; Sons-in-law, Albert K Donester and Philip B Gillette; Grandson Cannon B Hope and great-grandson, Jaden E Pillors. Norma was born in Belize City, Belize. She attended Wesley Primary School and Trapp High School. It was during her academic years that she earned the title of elocutionist and starred in an array of plays. Mom migrated to the states among the first wave of immigrants and settled in Brooklyn, NY. In those early years, her patriotism and selfless acts in assisting her fellow Belizeans, caused many to refer to her as the unofficial “Ambassador” of Belize. Belizeans near and far could always count on her in their time of need. However, her care for others did not stop there. She went on to receive two Nursing Assistant certifications, enabling her to become a most loving,efficient nurse and caregiver to her many patients, who often referred to her as their “Florence Nightingale”. She also became an active member of “The British Honduras Benevolent Association”, “The Queen of the Bay Committee” NY, and the choir for “St. Mark’s United Methodist Church”. Upon retiring, she moved back to her beloved Belize, where she reconnected with her “Wesley Roots”, her church, family and friends. She also re-established the patriotic tradition of her parents and their yearly custom of preparing a luncheon for the “Queen of the Bay” and her court. To these luncheons, mom was inclusive of her family and friends. As a patriot, she felt honored when she was specifically invited to be a guest of the Queen of England while the queen was in Belize. But, her proudest moment was when she was Grand Marshall for “The Queen of the Bay” parade in 2017. To say our mother was a “friend” and “patriot” does not do it. She was brave and bold, filled with a glowing personality, a gracious and poised entertainer, a world traveller and an unconditional lover of people. She was resourceful, kind, helpful and most of all, passionate for her grandchildren and a second mother to many. To all her family and loved ones, we informed her of all your calls of concern and prayers and she thanked you. She gave us a smile and many thanks, “thank you, thank you, thank you” , she said. We, her children, truly appreciate all the calls and texts we have been getting of all the beautiful memories of our mother who passed away. She bid us all a gracious farewell, leaving us painfully sad but satisfied and happy and hopefully you all as well. May our Great Merciful God be pleased with her soul.
