Mary L. Williams

MARY LEE WILLIAMS, daughter of the late M.C. and Ozzie Filmore, was born on July 26, 1935, in Houston County, Alabama. She peacefully departed this life on October 25, 2025. At an early age, her family moved to Albany, Georgia, where she received her education. During her youth, Mary attended Mount Olive Baptist Church and sang joyfully in the choir. She married at a young age and gave birth to her beloved son, Curtis Williams, who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her two brothers, Willie James Filmore and Caleb Filmore. While visiting Baltimore in 1959, she met one of her dearest lifelong friends, Ms. Caroline, on Popular Grove Street. Two years later, in 1961, she and her family—her parents, brother, and son—made Baltimore their permanent home. Through determination and hard work, they built a strong family foundation in Gwynn Oak, Maryland. Mary began her career with Maryland Transit, proudly serving as one of the first Black Toll Collectors in the State of Maryland. Despite the challenges she faced, she navigated her duties with diligence and grace, earning the respect of colleagues and travelers alike. After many years of service, she retired with honor. Faith remained central to Mary’s life. She was a devoted and faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she attended Sunday worship and Bible study regularly. Her dedication never wavered, and she maintained her membership until her passing. Mary cherished her relationship with Pastor McCoy and enjoyed fellowship with her dear church friend, Esther. Her devotion to family was unmatched. Mary cared lovingly for her father, mother, and brother during their illnesses, tending to them with compassion and strength until their passing. She truly embodied the spirit of a servant—giving, patient, and unwavering in love. Mary was well liked by everyone she met. Her outgoing personality, honesty, and sense of humor made her a joy to be around. Whether walking at Security Square Mall with her “mall family” or celebrating life’s simple pleasures with friends like Ms. Geravene and Ms. Caroline, she radiated warmth and positivity. She leaves to cherish her memory: two grandchildren, Tara Marie Williams and Brandon Jemel Williams; four great-grandchildren, including Kenneth; five nieces; four nephews; her sister-in-law, Shirley Filmore; her beloved “mall family”; and a host of other relatives and dear friends. Mary Lee Williams will be remembered for her honesty, faith, and strength—a woman who stood firm in her beliefs, loved deeply, and served her family and God with all her heart.
