Marjorie M. Powell

Marjorie Marie Powell was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on August 12, 1936 to the late Edward Powell, Sr. and Evelyn Powell Jones. She departed this life on August 13, 2020. After moving to Washington, D.C., she joined Israel Baptist Church in 1948. Marjorie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized on January 14, 1949 and became a member of the Jr. Choir, Usher Board and Girl Scouts. Marjorie graduated from Dunbar High School of Washington, D.C. and furthered her education at American University while working. Later, she was employed at the U.S Department of Commerce, Patent and Trade Office, and retired in the year 2000 as a Procurement Officer. Over the years, she became well-rounded in the Christian community. Marjorie served as a member of the Senior Choir, Senior Bible Study, STEM Ministry, Culinary Committee, Missionary Ministry, Dorcas Quilting Ministry, Diabetic Ministry, Flower Guild and the North Carolina Club. She was always willing to assist with church performances and served as a member of the Sanctuary Choristers, an organization made up of over 150 voices from various church denominations in the metropolitan area. Also, she visited and fellowshipped with the sick and shut-in. She received the 2006 Mother of the Year Award and a number of commendations from various organizations. Marjorie was a woman of many talents. She love gardening, cooking, quilting and sewing. Marjorie was a spectacular seamstress, making wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, robes, curtains and drapes. She was well known for her minced barbecue and peach cobbler at gatherings and enjoyed working with her Aunt Bessie in many catering events. She was a kind and gentle person that truly loved the Lord. She believed in helping others in any way she could. Spiritual energy was important to Marjorie, because she knew it promised a reward in both this life and the next. She fought the good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. We believe God saw her getting tired and took her home. She will be truly missed and always cherished. She leaves a devoted sister, Sherelene P. Thomas; one nephew, Darius E. Thomas (Karen); one niece, Gina T. Mitchell (Mark); one great nephew, Darius Thomas II; four great nieces, Ashley M. Barrientos (Chris), Asia N. Mitchell, Havilland S. Thomas and Gabrielle A. Thomas; a trusted sister friend, Joyce Dennis and many other relatives and friends
