Lamont John Thomas

On December 5, 1946, Zelda Mae and William Thomas welcomed into their world their third child and second son LAMONT JOHN THOMAS. Lamont spent his early years attending Baltimore City Public Schools and following his father’s footsteps, graduated from Carver Vocational Technical High School in 1964. Growing up, Lamont was well known throughout his Northwest Baltimore neighborhood. He was always available to support family and gladly offered his services to help neighbors with a big smile. He would cut grass, wash cars, walk dogs, shovel snow, sweep alleys, clean backyards, paint walls, plant flowers, and pick up groceries. He eventually secured a job in a candy store in the newly opened mall on Reisterstown Road. Lamont enrolled at Morgan State University after graduating from high school and was well into his third semester when the U.S. Army draft came calling. He served overseas in Korea and Japan before being honorably discharged in 1964. He again enrolled at Morgan and graduated with a B.S. degree. After college, he worked for the University of Maryland medical library before accepting a position with the Baltimore County Public Schools as a middle school science and social studies teacher. After twenty-five years of teaching, Lamont retired and began pursuing his true passions: line dancing, cycling, traveling, and volunteering. Lamont was full of energy, loved life, and enjoyed being around people. Line dancing was the perfect outlet for fun-loving Lamont. He would dance at any center that offered a class and ultimately became one of Baltimore’s favorite instructors. He taught at the Liberty Senior Center and the Northwood branch of the Enoch Pratt Library. He would often fill in for any instructor who needed a substitute. Lamont made all his classes fun and had a large following. He always encouraged his students to “Keep it Moving” and “Make it Hot”! As if line dancing was not vigorous enough, Lamont was also avid cyclist. He was a member of the Baltimore Cycling Club, and this energetic group would travel up and down the East Coast to ride on various bike trails. To relax, Lamont also enjoyed cruising. With so many people, so much to do, and so much to eat, this was the height of relaxation for him. He would cruise with family and friends, and when no one was available, he would cruise solo. When Lamont was not on his bike, traveling the country, or line dancing, he would spend his days volunteering. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Baltimore Aquarium, Center Stage, Meals on Wheels, and Our Daily Bread, just to name a few. He received the Maryland Governor’s Volunteer Service Award in 2018. Lamont was an outgoing, fun-loving, and caring person who loved family above all. He passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026. He leaves to cherish so many fond memories and family members: two sisters, Janet and Stephanie; brother, Michael (Rita); four nephews, Karl (Michelle), Reggie (Briana),Duane (Laura), and Scott (Emily); great-nephews and great-nieces, Abriel, Sterling, Keiran, Nevaeh, Tyler, Tia, Travon, Logan and Hannah; and a host of cousins and friends.
