Obituary Irene B. Watkins was born April 17, 1921 in Nash Co., N.C. The oldest child born to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Battle. She departed this life on January 11, 2011 after a long illness with Alzheimer’s Disease. She resided at Rock Creek Manor Nursing Center, Washington, DC., the past 5 years. Irene was educated in the Nash Co. Public School and further her education in Washington, D.C. She met and married the love of her life Leonard Watkins. Her father, husband, mother and brother preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory: one brother, Joseph H. Battle of Plainsville, Conn. A host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Special cousins Clydie Moore and Hala Cooper of Spring Hope, N.C. and other relatives and friends. She was a teacher, seamstress and nutritionist. Irene loved to travel, each year taking a vacation. She traveled locally and abroad to Africa, India, Paris, Australia, and Jerusalem. Her last trip to New Orleans when she took ill, during the “Hurricane Katrina”. She was such a pleasant giving person with a warm personality, a quiet and soft spoken woman. Irene had a green thumb and found of gardening, sewing and enjoyed exercising faithfully. She loved to watch 60 minutes and The Petey Greene Show back in the day. She would say “Tell it to the Young, Tell it to the Old, Tell it to the Hot, Tell it to the Cold”. She donated often to her favorite charities. She retired from employment with United Planning Organization. There she worked with the Office of Aging, nutritional programs. She served faithfully at the Wellness Center on Alamba Ave S.E. Her passion for community services ranges from feeding the homeless to community clean-ups and, serving the elderly. Irene would give advice and tell you it’s your choice.. She would say stay out of other people’s business and you will live longer. Aunt Irene lived a long and wonderful life. To have known her you would have a life long friend and confidant. To have loved her you would have someone to guide you through the trouble times in your life, to have loved her and be loved by her was to have a peace of heaven on earth.
