George Henry Smith Jr. Esq., a dedicated attorney, educator, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully June 28, 2026. He was 72 years old. Early Life and Education George was born at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., on June 15, 1954, to George Henry Smith Sr. and the late Leontine Capdeville Smith. Raised in the heart of the District, George attended Anacostia High School, where his ambition and sharp mind began to shine. Following graduation, he attended Howard University, earning his undergraduate degree in Political Science. Fueled by a passion for justice, he continued his education at Howard University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor. A Distinguished Legal Career George truly loved the practice of law and dedicated his life to advocacy and mentorship. In his early career, he honed his talents at the law offices of Hamilton, Gerald, and Smith. He later became a highly respected partner and lifelong friend of Michael Zebendilos Chukwudalu Okpala at the Zebendilos Law Firm. Beyond the courtroom, George was passionate about shaping the next generation of legal minds. He shared his wealth of knowledge and sharp wit as an Adjunct Professor teaching Pre-Law at the University of the District of Columbia. Love, Marriage, and Life's Pleasures On July 27, 2002, George married his soulmate and the love of his life, Valerie Hughes. George took immense joy in bringing a smile to Valerie’s face, frequently showering her with thoughtful gifts. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with shared passions—enjoying morning lattes, attending plays and movies, and exploring the city's fine dining scene. They were both born in Freedmen’s Hospital, and their families have an affiliation with Howard University. George was a man of diverse interests and sophisticated taste. He had a deep appreciation for culture, frequently visiting local museums and events. He also had a passion for fashion, driving his fancy cars, and the uniquely DMV tradition of steaming crabs. Music was another lifelong love; in his youth, George shared his rhythm and creativity as a guitarist in a local band. A Generous Spirit Above all, George was a giver with a deeply generous heart. He cared for his family in modern, thoughtful ways, frequently surprising his father by sending meals via DoorDash. He cherished staying connected, often "popping up" on the family kitchen camera just to share a sports game, a good movie, or a television show with his father. His warmth, spontaneous check-ins, and vibrant presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him. Surviving Family He leaves behind to cherish memories his loving wife Valerie Hughes Smith, his father George Henry Smith Sr. (the late Leontine Capdeville Smith), sister Attorney Winnette Smith, brothers Jonathan Smith, Judge Jeffrey Smith (Theodora), mother-in-law (the late Estelle Price-Street, father-in-law (the Late Donald Hughes, M.D.), sisters-in-law Janine, Kimberly, and Alexandra, three nieces Sasha Salmeron (Jordan), Kristin Foote (Andrew), Sierra Bylander (Matthew), and nephew Justin Smith, and two great nephews Athens Foote, and Julian Salmeron.
