George Alfred Jones, Jr.

George Alfred Jones Jr. was a Mother’s Day gift to the world, born on May 11, 1958, to Margie Jackson and the late George Jones Sr. One of five brothers, he grew up in Baltimore’s Whitelock neighborhood, where he was known and loved by all simply as “Junie.” From his earliest days, George was a young man full of curiosity, creativity, and warmth. As a youth, George spent summers in South Carolina visiting family, where he discovered a love of gardening alongside his grandmother, a quiet joy that stayed with him throughout his life. He and his brothers, Ronald and Warren, proudly served as Boy Scouts, building the sense of honor and integrity that would define his character. George graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School, affectionately known as “Mervo,” with the class of 1978. He was a gifted artist with a natural talent for drawing and woodworking. His craftsmanship was so admired that he sold his creations to neighbors and teachers alike, a testament to the skill and passion he brought to everything he made. Answering the call to serve his country, George entered the United States Army. He was honorably discharged following an injury in 1979, carrying with him a veteran’s quiet strength and discipline that never left him. George was a man of many talents and boundless enthusiasm. As DJ Hollyrock, he brought the party to life at family cookouts and neighborhood gatherings, spinning records that spanned rock, heavy metal, soul, and club music — because George loved it all. Ever resourceful and ingenious, he built his own speakers from parts he found in the neighborhood alleys, eventually investing in professional turntables and amplifiers to perfect his craft. Music wasn’t just a hobby for George; it was an expression of his soul. He was always sharp. Not afraid to sport platform shoes or a leather jacket — and he carried himself with a confidence that turned heads. He loved westerns on TV and film, and one of his greatest pleasures was hunting for hidden treasures at Goodwill, finding beauty and value where others might not think to look. In 1985, George married Delvon Pearson, and in 1986 their daughter Ashley was born — a joy that deepened his already profound love for family. George had a remarkable gift for remembering family connections that others might overlook, holding the threads of his family’s history together with care and pride. Throughout his career, George brought that same dedication and strong work ethic to every role he held. He served with the Division of Corrections from 1987 to 1995, and later with the US Post Office from 1996 to 2007. George Jones Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, creativity, and community. He is survived by his daughter, Ashley; stepdaughter Khaleta and their mother, Delvon; his step grandchildren, Ananda and Wyatt; his mother, Margie Jones; his brothers, Ronald, Michael, and William; and a cherished circle of nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives are richer for having known him.
