Floyd Smith

Floyd Elmond Smith, affectionately known as Smitty, a treasured patriarch, community stalwart, and loyal friend to many, gained his wings on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at his residence in Hyattsville, MD. Floyd was born on October 28, 1928, in Memphis, TN, to the late Ms. Mozella Taylor. Floyd grew up in Memphis, TN alongside his siblings, James, Vester, preceded him in death Romaster, Morgan, Jackie, Eddie, Phelton and Antwon. He attended Lamond College, where he studied and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served as a Cook and Infantry man. He received an Honorable discharge March 1949. Floyd married his lifelong love, Stella Hart, and together they built a life rich in love and laughter. Their union was blessed with one child, Vera Jean Johnson. He then came to Washington, DC where he worked at the Department of Commerce as a Senior Budget Analyst. Where he retired in 1986 with 37 years of great service. Floyd found pleasure in the simple joys of life such as line dancing, softball, exercising, bowling, teaching, and cooking. However, his main joy was line dancing! He was well known and a pillar throughout the DMV line dance circuit. Floyd was a phenomenal line dance instructor and truly the life of the party! Floyd is survived by his daughter Vera Jean Johnson; two granddaughters Lennitta Bryant and Charnice Waters (Dion); five great grandchildren and thirteen great great grandchildren. His brother James and sister Vester and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased in death by his loving wife, Stella, mother Mozella, sisters Romaster and Jackie and brothers Morgan, Eddie, Phelton and Antwon. Floyd "Smitty" Smith will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. His life was well-lived, full of purpose, joy, and an abundance of love. Floyd's homegoing services will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at New Born Church of God in the Spirit of Christ, 726 60th Place, Fairmont Heights, MD 20743. Following the service, the interment will be at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906. The celebration of life will be held at the Rollingcrest-Chillum Community Center, 2 – 5 p.m., 6122 Sargent Rd, Hyattsville, MD 20782. Please come with your dancing shoes and good spirits!
