Cleavy Thomas

CLEAVY (KEETER) THOMAS, beloved daughter of the late Nannie (Watson) Cox and Cleatus Keeter, was born on August 9, 1930, in Ontario, Virginia. She peacefully departed this life on May 18, 2025, at the age of 94. Cleavy received her education through the Ontario, Virginia school system. She was united in holy matrimony to Edward Thomas Jr. Their union was one built on love, faith, and dedication. They built a life Baltimore, Maryland, grounded in family, hard work, and community service. Cleavy found fulfillment in many aspects of her life, but nothing brought her more joy than gathering with loved ones around a good meal. Known for her cooking, she created unforgettable memories through dishes like her signature cornbread, coconut cake with pineapple, and her famous holiday spreads. Thanksgiving dinners began days in advance, and her Christmas fruitcakes—meticulously soaked with brandy weeks beforehand—became a treasured tradition. Easter brought joy to children with handmade baskets and a big family meal, while Christmas was especially festive with tree decorating, outdoor lights, and her cherished holiday china. Her warmth extended beyond the kitchen. Cleavy’s home was a haven— always open for those in need of comfort, conversation, or a connection to family history. She had a special way of making everyone feel seen and welcomed. An avid gardener, Cleavy cultivated both beauty and sustenance in her gardens, transforming her yard into a peaceful retreat filled with colorful flowers and fresh vegetables. She was also deeply engaged in her community, receiving numerous awards and recognitions from the Mayor, Senate, and Governor for her contributions and dedication. Cleavy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Thomas Jr.; her sisters, Mary Spivey and Beulah Keeter; and her brothers, Richard Woody and Charlie Woody. She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Larry Thomas; her daughter, Marlene Knight; her daughter-in-law, Darlene Thomas; her brother, Junior Woody; four grandchildren—Daniel Williams, Chianti Thomas, Marlon Lewis, and Tiffany (Knight) Griffin (Quan); ten great-grandchildren. several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and cherished friends. Cleavy Thomas lived a life full of love, service, and faith. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
