Bettye B. Christmas-Murray

Bettye Beatrice Christmas-Murray was born on March 4, 1948, in Warrenton, North Carolina, to Thomas Haywood and Malanie Christmas. She was the eldest of five children, a role she carried with strength and love throughout her life. Her siblings, Louis Douglas, Thomas McCoy, Ernestine, and Annette, shared in a childhood that would soon transition from the quiet rhythms of North Carolina to the vibrant streets of Baltimore, Maryland, where the family made their home. Growing up on the east side of Baltimore, Bettye held a determination that refused to be diminished by circumstance. She embraced life fully and formed lifelong friendships with Brenda, Gloria, Shyree, and Eva, friendships she cherished deeply. She proudly attended Frederick Douglass High School, one of Baltimore's largest and most historic schools at the time, where her confidence and vibrant spirit were already evident. Her journey continued at Morgan State University, where her passions for food and fashion flourished. There, she joined the illustrious sorority of the Candy Cane Girls and earned high honors in Home Economics. Those who knew her often heard her say, "If you look good, you feel good. And if you feel good, you do good." It was more than a saying. It was a philosophy she lived by, teaching her children and grandchildren to carry themselves with dignity, self-respect, pride and excellence - values she modeled every day. Bettye devoted more than 40 years to a career in education. She began as a classroom teacher, serving students at Oakland Mills Elementary in Howard County and Montebello Elementary in Baltimore City. Yet her calling extended beyond traditional classrooms. While earning her Master's degree from Goucher College, she felt compelled to serve those often forgotten. She became an educator within Maryland's correctional system, including the Maryland State Penitentiary, the Baltimore City Correctional Center, the Jessup Boot Camp, and the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women. There, she managed computer labs and taught reading and English skills, helping incarcerated individuals earn their GEDs and rediscover hope. With patience, compassion, and firm belief in second chances, she treated every person with dignity and respect. Her classroom became a place where people felt seen, encouraged, and capable of change. Her work was not simply a career; it was an extension of her character. In 2014, she retired to dedicate her time and heart to caring for her grandchildren. Bettye understood that feeding people was one of the purest ways to show love and care. Her home was often filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aroma of something prepared with intention and affection. Among her daughter's closest friends — many of whom lovingly regarded Bettye as a second mother — she was known to suddenly announce, "I'm going to bake you girls a cake," turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. Her vegetable lasagna became a beloved favorite at family and church gatherings, a dish that reflected her generous spirit and her joy in bringing people together around the table. Faith was the anchor of Bettye's life. She served as a worship leader and minister at the Philadelphia Church of Christ in Baltimore, sharing her love for God with joy and conviction. Her faith guided her words, her decisions, and her generous spirit. Bettye also loved music and freely shared her God-given gift of singing whenever she could, blessing congregations with heartfelt musical selections during praise and worship services. Through song, she uplifted spirits, encouraged faith, and expressed the joy that lived within her. She later married Pastor Daniel Murray in a ceremony at Mount Sinai in Egypt, a moment that reflected her deep devotion and adventurous spirit. Guided by curiosity and gratitude for God's creation, she traveled across the world. She journeyed to China with friends, explored Cuba with her cousin Tina and family, and sailed to beautiful destinations including Bermuda, Florence and Pisa in Italy, Cannes in France, Lisbon in Portugal, and Seville, Valencia, and Barcelona in Spain. Wherever she went, she carried her warmth, elegance, and genuine kindness— leaving lasting impressions and friendships along the way. She embraced the world as a reflection of God's creativity and beauty. Above all, Bettye will be remembered for her impeccable character. She possessed a rare ability to make people feel valued, welcomed, and loved. Her laughter was comforting, her wisdom steady, and her compassion limitless. She was a woman of grace whose presence brought peace and whose encouragement inspired confidence in others. Bettye grew into the remarkable woman whose warmth, grace, and unwavering kindness would touch countless lives. She lived each day with courage, faith, and purpose until her peaceful passing. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Haywood and Malanie Christmas; her beloved son, Timothy Christmas; and her siblings, Thomas McCoy, Ernestine Speight, and Annette Christmas. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Daniel Murray; dedicated daughter and son-in-law, Tamar and Justin Gladden; her treasured grandchildren, Thomas, Naama, and Benjamin Gladden; her brother and sister-in-law, Louis Douglas and Sharlene Christmas; her niece and nephew, Ternerra and Brandon Dowd; Marquis Hunter; and a host of extended family members and dear friends too numerous to name —whose lives were enriched by her kindness and joyful spirit. To know Bettye was to experience joy, style, wisdom, and unwavering faith. On February 6, 2026, at the dawn of the Sabbath Day, she drew her final breath. This day of rest and rejoicing, marked her gentle transition. Though she has departed from our sight, her love, faith, and gentle spirit remain with us always. Her journey continues in eternal peace.
