Mieka Cherron Marie Cowley

Mieka Cherron Marie Cowley, daughter of the late Marie Angelita Dorsey and Kent Miller Dorsey, passed away in Chicago on December 12, 2022. Mieka graduated in 1993 from Randallstown High School where she was an active member of the school orchestra as a standout flautist. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Society at Hood College in 1996 where she received the Beneficial-Hodson Scholarship for Academic Excellence. She received her Juris Doctor in 2000 from Howard University School of Law where she received a Merit Scholarship. She also gained legal experience working in the U.S Department of Agriculture, Office of Civil Rights, and in the U.S. House of Representatives, Offices of Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. Over the next ten years Mieka worked for several firms, and her legal experience ran the gamut from family law and civil litigation, to corporate contract review. She served with integrity and was an active member of the Maryland State Bar Association, and Association of Corporate Counsel. But Mieka was so much more than that. Though small in stature, Mieka was larger than life, or as she liked to say, “I’m big”. A woman of strength and grace, Mieka brought endless light and love into the day of everyone she met regardless of the circumstances. Her energy and gentle nature were a blessing to those who had the pleasure to know her, and whether you had a brief encounter or knew her for a lifetime you never forgot Mieka. Her bravery and warrior spirit were inspirational as was the way she unerringly maintained her compassion despite her own challenges and battles in life. Mieka loved to travel and although her preference was for sun, sea and sand, one of her favorite places to visit was Ireland, the birthplace of her husband and everlasting love of her life, Manus, who never left her side. Mieka was happiest though at home where she created a haven for herself and Manus. She loved to cook, especially seafood, though she often bemoaned the lack of good crab meat available in the Midwest. It was in the kitchen where Manus proposed. Mieka filled the house with plants, flowers, candles and aroma therapy scents and her attention to detail and little touches are what made it a home. Mieka is survived by her husband Manus Cowley, her father Kent Miller Dorsey, her brother Kent Marcus Dorsey, and a host of family and relatives and many great friends. While Mieka will be sadly missed, she will be happily and lovingly remembered by all.
