    Mary J Shorter

    February 10, 1945 - March 14, 2022

    Mary Shorter 77 (also known as ("Grand Mary”) was born on February 10, 1945 in Crumpler, West Virginia. The Lord called Mary home on March 14, 2022 She was the oldest of two children (Brother David W. Johnson deceased) born to her late Mother Thelma Mae Johnson. Mary’s Dear Aunt Sallie Brooker also passed away. At age 11, she moved to the Washington, D.C. Mary attended DC Public Schools and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. She was married to Raymond Shorter for 49 years until his passing in 2013. Mary worked in various Federal Government Agencies as a young adult providing complex administrative and accounting skills. She then worked as an Advertising Sales Coordinator for the Capital Spotlight Newspaper, a Black-owned business in Washington DC for 20 years. While working at the spotlight, Mary even published her own newspaper. Mary worked in Montgomery County MD as an Office Services Coordinator for the Department of Finance, Treasury Division, Property Tax Section for 15 years before she retired in 2015. Mary received many awards during her work history. She was a kind and sweet person always helping people even if she did not know them. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, watching television, listening to music and shopping. Mary, Ma, Grand Mary, Ma Mary as we affectionally know her leaves to carry on her legacy: Three Daughters Pamela (Randy Coleman), Arlisa (Orlando Roberson Sr.) and Crystal Tatum. Eight Grandchildren Riondo Shorter, David Coleman, Orlando Roberson Jr., Joshua Roberson, Alexis Roberson, Essence Tatum, Caylin Tatum, Damion Tatum Jr., Three Great Grandchildren Aiden Shorter, Austin Shorter and Arriona Shorter and an enormous number of relatives, friends and people whose lives she touched.
