Hazel J. Spriggs
August 26, 1922 - January 23, 2022
“Loved Ones, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of Righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day. Amen HAZEL JOHNSON-SPRIGGS transitioned from labor to eternal rest on Sunday, January 23, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Altonia Johnson. Hazel was born on August 26, 1922, in Washington, D.C. She was the eldest of four children. Sisters Annie and Florine and a brother, Clarence. Both her parents and her siblings preceded her in death. Hazel accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where she was active in many church activities. She regularly attended and at one time taught Sunday school. Hazel was educated in the D.C. Public School system, graduating from Armstrong High School in 1939. It was at that time she met the love of her life, Arthur Spriggs. She and Arthur were married, November 1941. To that union five sons were born. Leslie, Arthur, Jr., Reginald, Barry and Terrance. Hazel was a stay-at-home mother during her sons’ younger years. Later, she was employed by Giant Food Store, where she worked until her retirement. Her story doesn’t stop here. After her retirement, Hazel was faced with the challenge of caring for her son Leslie, who was bed bound and needed assistance with his daily routine. She was responsible for providing that care for him. God blessed Hazel with the strength, courage and stamina needed for what would be approximately 15 years of a mother’s dedication, devotion, and unconditional love. Hazel was an extraordinary Mother, nick-named “Dynamite.” Her love for and devotion to her sons over the years is beyond measure. God blessed her with 99 years of life, and she was constantly praising and thanking God for blessing her. “Dynamite,” clearly was the perfect name for her. At 99, she still knew what she wanted and how she wanted it. She read the newspaper daily and was adamant about the paper’s food sales on Wednesday. She loved to go shopping with her son Reggie and she knew where everything was in the store and what isles it was in. She loved people and people loved her, she had a caring and giving heart. She was also a mom to many of her sons’ friends and was always delighted to hear from them. Hazel was preceded in death by her Sons, Leslie, and Arthur, Jr.; Grandsons: Leslie, Jr. and Jovon. Nephews: Alphonso and Ronnie. Hazel leaves to cherish her memory: Sons, Reginald, Barry and Terrance. Daughters-In-Law: Dannette and Margaret; Granddaughters: Cheryl, Sherron, Selina. Grandsons: Arthur, III; Great-Grands: Jasmine, David, Kainen, Kierra, and Brittany. Great-Great Grands: Maurise, Kroix, and Arron. Nieces: Barbara Ann, Alfreda and Audrey. Nephew: Steven and devoted family friend, Danita Frazier. “TO GOD BE THE GLORY”
