Evelyn Grace Hunter Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Evelyn Grace Hunter peacefully entered eternal rest on the evening of Wednesday, July 20, 2022. Born on October 20, 1937, to the late Hollis and Callie Snoddy, Evelyn was the seventh of eight children and the youngest girl. She was born and raised on Sheriff Road in Deanwood, Washington, DC. She attended DC Public Schools. Evelyn was married to the late Donald L. Hunter. From this union, they had five daughters: Darlyn Jeanette, Kim Veronica (deceased), Charlene Yvette, Beverly Annette, and Andrea Waynette. Known as Evie by her friends and colleagues, she lived a full life. She joined the federal workforce at the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1960. She was a member of the Black Ski Group, Postal Federal Employee Bowling League, Toastmasters, and Phi Gamma Nu Business Fraternity. In 1976, she graduated from Federal City College (now UDC) with a BS degree in Business Administration. She won many awards and accolades in her various groups. She retired as a Postal Supervisor in 1993. She enjoyed reading, traveling US & abroad, country music, Star Wars, and British television. Evelyn accomplished many things, with the love, support, and assistance from her parents. Evelyn was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church, Deanwood, her entire life. She was baptized in her youth by the late Reverend Junius A. Wheeler. After her "prodigal son” period, she returned in 1983. As one who loved the Lord - she served him with strength, tenacity, and great faith. During her time at Antioch, she served as a secretary to the Pastor, Church Office Manager, and a Trustee. She participated in several ministries: Church School, Young-at-Heart, Christian Education, Youth Ministry, Women's Ministry, and Music Ministry (Gospel Chorus, Combined Choir, and her favorite, Wheeler Memorial Gospel Singers). Evelyn valued education. She was instrumental in ensuring that Antioch’s youth participated in the Lott Cary Youth Seminar and the Educational Congress with the Baptist Convention of DC and Vicinity and the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC) - Eastern Region. Her work in Christ extended beyond Antioch. For over 30 years, she attended the Annual Hampton University Ministers’ Conference and Choir Directors’ and Organists’ Guild. She sang during service times and in the Charles H. Flax Memorial Concerts. She maintained active participation in Mt Bethel Women’s Department, serving a term as president and historian. She possessed a special dedication to the Women's Department of the PNBC, serving in various capacities including secretary to the president. As a member of the Church Trustee Fellowship of Metropolitan Washington Scholarship committee, she always encouraged the Antioch youth to seek those scholarship opportunities. Evelyn received such joy from hearing the college students respond with “Thank you Ms. Hunter for the scholarship”. Evelyn remained an active, involved, and integral member of her various ministries, committees, and organizations until she could no longer physically participate. Her dedication to the church and the Trustee Ministry afforded her the title of Trustee Emeritus. Her life will always be honored and celebrated by her daughters and sons-in-law : Darlyn (Larry Newman), Charlene (Robert Sturdivant), Beverly, Andrea (David Dennis); 17 grandchildren :Burudi, Amanda, Kimbra, Charnelle, Tyrena, Darnisha, Andre, Danielle, Larelle, Alvin, Callieshia, Anthony, Larry Jr., Earl Jr., Michael, Kimkia, and Zackeidria; 35 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, four sisters-in-law Margaret (Ann) Snoddy, Mary Francis Hunter, Elaine Gray, Delois Singletary; brother-in-law Demetrius Hunter and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, and her sons and daughters within the Body of Christ. Her parents, siblings, daughter Kim, grandson Mario, great-grandchildren Shaniqwa, William (Hen Hen), Angel and DeQuan preceded her in death.
