Aaron McKoy, Jr.

Aaron McKoy, Jr. was born on April 5, 1936 to the late Aaron Sr. and Mae Della McKoy. Aaron was raised on a farm in Dunn, North Carolina with his seven siblings. He was called to rest on Sunday, February 12, 2023. “Brother” (as he was affectionately known to family) attended Harnett High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1955 to 1959. After serving his country, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland and lived with his aunt. He then enrolled in Apex Beauty and Barbering School. Aaron married Dolores Williams on December 18, 1965, at Wayland Baptist Church. From this union they had two children, Karl and Karen. Aaron enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed long Sunday drives in his Cadillac, family vacations, and sharing his barbershop stories. He loved his grandsons, Aaron and Adam. He also loved facetiming his great-granddaughter, Zanessa. Aaron was a blessed man. He found love again after reuniting with an old friend at a high school reunion. On May 17, 2014 he married Alberta Monroe in Erwin, North Carolina. They spent their honeymoon in Puerto Rico and traveled to Atlantic City, Tennessee, Ashville, NC and to the beach. They shared time together eating, walking, and traveling between their homes in Maryland and North Carolina. Aaron was employed by Equitable Trust Bank for over 20 years while working as a Barber. Aaron and his brother Robert opened McKoy’s Barbershop on West Belvedere Avenue in 1969. Aaron was pillar of the community and mentored many young boys in the area. When he retired from the bank, he worked full time in the barbershop until 2014. Aaron continued his love of barbering, by servicing clients in senior centers and hospitals. Aaron founded the Harnett High Alumni Association Baltimore Chapter. He was President of the local chapter for several years and traveled to association reunions regularly. Aaron was a member of Wayland Baptist Church. Aaron was a dedicated member of the Tuesday Morning Bible Study class and Midweek-Manna. He also volunteered in the Food Giveaway. When in North Carolina, he attended Smith Grove Baptist Church. Aaron was an avid walker, walking for miles in the early morning. He loved cars, music, clothes, and food. The Cadillac was his favorite car. Through the years, he grew a collection of model cars. He enjoyed traditional gospel and classic R&B and had a large collection of records and eight track tapes. He enjoyed shopping at flea markets but was also known for having a tailor come to his house and fit him for a suit. He loved coordinating his outfits. Aaron loved to cook as well as eat. He started preparing for his annual “Thanksgiving Open House” in July and he was serious about getting his menu right. Aaron was also the family member you called on to fix things. Whether it be something around the house or on an automobile, he was the man to ask. Aaron treasured his family. He made calls, visited, and sent cards frequently to his family all over the country. He always knew what was going on because he stayed in touch. He was also the family historian. He remembered people, places and things and knew the family history. He was preceded in death by his first wife Dolores W. McKoy, son Karl A. McKoy and brother James McKoy. Aaron is survived by: his wife, Alberta McKoy; daughter, Karen McKoy-Bracy (FL); son-in-law, Rodney L. Bracy; grandchildren, Aaron Spencer Bracy and Adam McKoy Bracy; great-granddaughter, Zanessa Bracy; son, Kelvin Battle (PA); step-daughter, Toni Monroe (NY); step-son, David Mabry (NY); step-grandson, Daniel Monroe; brother, Robert McKoy; sisters, Annie Woods (TN), Bessie James, Hattie Mae Chester (NC), Lucinda Colvin (Mitchel) (NC), Della Bland; sisters-in-law, Brenda McKoy, Gladis McKoy and Joan Williams; adopted daughters, Monique Colden (VA), Karen Jones (VA) and Tracy Larkins; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
