William Bert Powers

William "Bill" Bert Powers, 83, of Washington, DC, passed away on October 14, 2008 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He was born in Canton, Illinois on November 30, 1924 to Cloran and Katherine Jordan Powers. Surviving are two daughters and one son, Margaret Powers Hall of Peoria, Illinois, Kristin Powers Hummingbird of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Gregory Powers of Tampa, Florida. Also surviving are six grandchildren; Scott Hall of Peoria, Illinois, Jennifer Hall of Rancho Santa Margarita, California, Preston Powers of Phoenix, Arizona, Brandon Powers of Phoenix, Arizona, Lea Powers Brown Peter of Owasso, Oklahoma and Jerry Powers, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one great grandchild; Caleb Brown of Owasso, Oklahoma; two sisters, Alice Booth and Hazel Jeakins, both of Canton, Illinois and one brother, Cloran "Nick" Powers of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons; Preston Powers, William Bert Powers, Jr. and Douglas Powers; three sisters; Zelma Thompson, Lois Jeakins, Helen Carpenter and two brothers; Alfred Powers and Edwin Powers. He made the decision to dedicate his career to our country and served in both the Army and the Air Force, retiring from the Air Force. He served in the Battle of the Bulge, served in Europe in World War II, trained troops for the Air Force in the Korean war and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam war in 1965 and 1966. He enjoyed being with nature in his free time, fishing, hunting and playing golf. He loved his airplanes. He wanted to fly jets for the Air Force but less than perfect eyesight didn't allow that, so, he worked on planes and trained specialist to take good care of them. He did have his amateur pilot license. He lived the later years of his life in the United States' Soldiers and Airmen's Home, which is nestled in the heart of our nation's capital on 320 acres of secure, park-like settings, along with other veterans. Beautiful, century-old buildings stand as testament to the rich history that makes up one of America's oldest veterans' retirement homes, a place he was proud to call home. His love and pride for his six children, and his mother, Katherine, were two of his greatest gifts in life. "May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.
