Tonya D Hammond-Durham

Tonya Denise Hammond was born on August 28, 1965 in Washington, DC to the late Mary Hammond Jefferson. Tonya was the oldest of three children. Tonya grew up in the home of her grandparents Plinie and Ellaree Hammond. She was called to glory on March 15, 2011. As a child, Tonya was baptized at the Meridian Hill Baptist Church. She sustained her membership there throughout her life. Under the spiritual guidance of Pastor Calvin Cage, Tonya grew and matured in her spiritual walk with the Lord. She loved attending Sabbath, Discipleship, and Bible Study classes. She loved assisting her late mother in running the food bank at the Cathedral of Christ Baptist Church, the sister church of Meridian Hill. She always had a heart to help others. Tonya was educated in the District of Columbia Public School system. She graduated from Coolidge Senior High School in 1983. Most recently, she attended the University of Phoenix seeking a degree in Business Management. After graduation from high school she began work in the D.C. Public School system and was employed there for approximately 18 years. At the time of her passing, she was employed with Israel Metropolitan CME Church serving as an administrative assistant to Reverend Ricky D. Helton. Tonya married Kevin Durham on September 18, 1993. Together they raised a daughter, Ashley Hammond and a son, Kevin Durham, Jr. She was the proud grandmother of Jazmyn Green. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who worked hard and sacrificed for her family. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, children, grandchild; sister, Rhonda Jefferson and brother, William Jefferson. She also leaves her step-father William Jefferson, two nephews: Maliik and Kahlil Jefferson; four aunts: Delorice Powell, Plinie Ann Johnson (Percy), Phyllis Ferguson and Devonaline “Beany” Yates (Melvin).
