Nannie Ruth Dickens

Nannie Ruth Dickens was born to the late Allen and Leah Hilliard on November 28, 1925 in Nash County, North Carolina. She departed this life February 16, 2019, at her home in Washington, DC. Nannie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was baptized at St. John Baptist Church in Red Oak, N.C. and later joined Mt. Joy Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In 1946 Nannie and Augustus Dickens were joined in holy matrimony in North Carolina and shortly afterwards they relocated to Washington, DC. Her first job was with Hot Shoppes and she later went to work for at the United States Senate in 1961 where she remained for 32 years. She retired in 1993. Nannie had a warm quite spirit. She was dedicated to her family and always welcomed them to her home. As one of the first of her siblings to relocate to the Washington area she and her husband always opened their home to others in the family, many as they relocated to Washington. She always supported her children and grandchildren in everything they did. To cherish her memory, she leaves a devoted daughter, Yolanda Burkley, Washington, DC; two sons Clarence Dickens of Rocky Mount, NC; Augustus (Debra) Dickens of Bowie, MD; seven grandchildren, Omar (Tori) Burkley, Grayson, GA; Camilla Burkley, Washington, DC; Clarence (Erica) Dickens, Bowie, MD; Brandon Dickens (Jackie), Shorewood, MN; Zenail Dickens, District Heights, MD; Michael Speight, Severn, MD, Augustus (Kassandra) Dickens, Severn, MD; many great-grandchildren and many great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters Ollie McDaniel and Fannie Powers and six sisters in-laws Beulah Hilliard and Dorothy Hilliard, Josephine Nolley, Mary Ellen Davis, Anita Whitehurst Blanche Quinchette and, a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
