Mary Vivian Fowler

Mary Vivian Fowler (well-known as “Vivian”) was born in Washington, DC on April 23, 1931 to the late Murriell Brawner and Mary Lottie Silliday. She was educated in the District of Columbia School System. After graduating from Cardoza High School in 1949, “Vivian” embarked a new journey in the world of employment. At the age of 18, she began working as a waitress with Marty’s Restaurant in downtown, DC. Further down the road, she decided to expand her horizons by becoming an employee with Tanners’ Cleaners. After working at Tanners’ for a number of years, she decided to apply and was hired by Bureau of National Affairs (now known as Bloomberg BNA) in 1970 as a collator and assembler in Circulation. In 1973, she transferred to the clipping service in BNA Plus and later moved to the library where she worked as a librarian clerk. After working with BBNA for 29 years, “Vivian” decided to embrace retirement. During her retirement, “Vivian” pursued in undertaking things that she had a passion for doing. These pastimes included her love for traveling. It didn’t matter whether it was traveling from the ground, across the waters of the seas, or flying. Other pastimes consisted of dancing (especially line dancing), bowling, volunteering her services with seniors and children, spending time with her family, friends, and most of all, reading God’s Word. Another love she had was cooking! “Vivian” was well-known for her expertise in making potato salad. Anyone who knew her can vouch for the numerous hours that she put in making this loveable dish. To keep herself going, “Vivian” enjoyed congregating with others as she became socially involved with several clubs; including being a part of various bowling leagues along with joining the CB Club. Later on, she was appointed to be a member of the Eastern Stars where she became a part of Queen Esther Chapter No. 1, Thornton A. Jackson Court No. 3, and Mecca Court No.2; to name a few. Vivian’s independent, free-spirited, and loving personality was admired by many. She was a caregiver who took pleasure in assisting others. Furthermore, she knew how to develop meaningful relationships. In other words, wherever she went she made lots of friends. Vivian leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Janice Sims and Kim Armstrong; son-in-law, Harold Sims; two grandchildren, Renee’ Johnson and Rajah Sims; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Baldwin and Lonnell McCombs; a loving cousin, Vincent Chambers, and many other family members and friends who loved her so much!
