Marva Carroll

Marva Carroll was a loving mother and grandmother, a caring sister, a loyal friend, and a faithful servant of God. She was selfless and touched the lives of so many people. She inspired everyone she met, and had a smile that lit up a room. Her family and friends were everything to her. She was born in Blackridge, Virginia on August 5th, 1944. She was the 5th child born to the late James Harrison Carroll and Bernice Powell Carroll. During her early years growing up in Blackridge, she attended Sunday school and was baptized and then joined the Good Hope Baptist Church. Even though she would later leave Blackridge, she always considered it home. She attended Blackridge Elementary school and then attended East End High School in South Hill, Va and graduated in 1962. She then took a job at Booker Board Elementary School working as a secretary for one year before deciding to go to Baltimore, Md. to live with her Aunt Marion at which point she began her work career. She was employed at the Social Security Administration for a number of years before she then decided to move to Washington, DC where she was employed by several Federal Government agencies and later worked and retired from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2002. Marva later married Clifton Russell and from that union one son Vincent Russell was born. Vincent would later go on to marry Brandy Russell who would go on to create two beautiful little girls, Morgan and Emory. Marva loved her grandchildren and would light up whenever they were in her presence. She loved spending time with old friends and new. Over the years; whenever there was an East End High School class reunion, she would always go back to see and be with old classmates and friends. She also enjoyed traveling. She enjoyed cruises, bus trips and spending time in resorts at vacation destinations. She loved spending time with her sister Peggy, who lived only a short 5 minute drive away. The “Carroll Girls” were often seen together, out on the town, traveling or just spending time together; with and without their matching fur coats. She departed this life on July 20th, 2024 at her home in Southeast Washington, DC after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by brothers Bob (wife Ruby) and Eddie (wife Sandra, and sister in law Kathy. Marva leaves to mourn her son, Vincent (wife, Brandy) two granddaughters, Morgan and Emory. Two brothers Leroy Carroll; Charles Carroll (Katie) and sister Peggy Fleming (Hudie), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
