Mae T. Johnson

Reflections Mae Thelma Croom was born April 14, 1930 in Wayne County, North Carolina, the eldest of two children to the late Tyson and Sudie Croom. She attended Dillard HS in Goldsboro, NC and then attended Richardson Memorial Hospital Training School. She moved to Washington DC in the 1950s where she continued her career as a Registered Nurse and later met and married her husband Joseph E. A. Johnson Jr. in December of 1959. From this union resulted two children Lisa M. Johnson, and Michael J.K. Johnson. In 1978, Mae was baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church after attending the Breath of Life Crusade under the direction of the late Pastor Charles D. Brooks. Mae along with her daughter Lisa, were charter members of the newly formed Breath of Live Church now in Fort Washington, MD. During her time at Breath of Live Church she served as Sabbath School Teacher, Usher, and on the Hospitality Committee. In September of 1994 Mae transferred her membership to The Takoma Park SDA Church. She along with her husband were active members supporting the sick & shut-in ministry, community services, 50+, Women’s Ministry, and the Discovery Bible School. Mae was always willing to give of her time and her means as a loyal supporter of numerous charities like The American Cancer Society, Children’s Charities, and SDA World ministries. Mae was a devout “Sabbath Schooler”. She studied her lesson daily, was always determined to be on time, and to actively engage in “spirited” class discussions every Sabbath. Many of her Sabbath School members would say she was the heart and soul of the class. She also served as a church elder for a brief time before retiring from the VA Medical Center in 1996 in order to devote her time to the care of her ailing husband. Her husband Joseph, proceeded her in death in November of 1998. Mae spent much of her life caring for others. In 2015 she became the primary caregiver of her brother Elbert Croom until his death in 2016. Mae loved to cook. She will be fondly remembered for her sweet potato soufflé, Carrot, German Chocolate, and “vegetarian” Rum cakes in addition to her collard greens and Carolina barbeque ribs. She leaves behind to continue her legacy, her children Lisa Johnson and Michael Johnson, four grandchildren; Evans Chambers, Alexander Chambers, Elisha Chambers, and Danielle Johnson; three great grandchildren; Adam Chambers, Raegan Chambers, and Owen Chambers; Rachel Johnson, Trina Chambers, Joseph Johnson III, Glise Johnson, Elaine Lyons and a circle of family and devoted friends. Her life was well lived and she now sleeps waiting for the trumpets to welcome her into the kingdom. Until then she shall forever live within our memories. When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!
