Dr. Lubertha C. Fleming

Lubertha Alexander was born in Jacksonville, Florida on May 28, 1932. She was the youngest child and only daughter in her family which included two older brothers. Lubertha moved to Hampton Roads, Virginia and married Joshua Colyer in Norfolk. She received her bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State College (University), her master’s degree from Old Dominion University and her doctorate degree from Virginia Tech. Lubertha served in Norfolk Public Schools as a classroom teacher and reading specialist for almost 40 years. She was for many years a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church before joining Queen Street Baptist Church, both in Norfolk, Virginia. Lubertha remained a strong advocate of education all of her life. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music, watching sports, reading and writing short stories and traveling to visit her children and grandchildren. She was called home on April 14, 2018 while at the Woodbine Rehabilitation Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Lubertha was preceded in death by her first husband, Joshua C. Colyer; her second husband, Ernest C. Fleming, and her brother Joseph Alexander. She is survived by her brother William Alexander of Los Angles, California; her four children, Rodney G. Colyer of San Francisco, California; Min. Valerie C. Ford (Lee) of Hampton, Virginia; Dr. Sheryl L. Colyer of New York, and Pamela Murray Johnson (Brett) of Silver Spring, Maryland. Lubertha is also survived by five grandchildren, Rev. Edward Ford (Elissa) of West Hartford, Connecticut; Tamla Ford of Hampton, Virginia; Nzinga Murray of Los Angeles, California; Adam Murray of Silver Spring, Maryland; Colyer Johnson of Silver Spring, Maryland, and great-grandson Malachi Ford, of West Hartford, Connecticut, as well as great-great grand twins, Malachi Jr. and Esther. Additionally, she has many nieces and nephews in Florida and California. The service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., April 23, 2018 in the chapel at Marshall-March Funeral Home, 4308 Suitland Road, Suitland, Maryland 20746. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m., April 24, 2018 at Quantico National Cemetery, 1824 Joplin Road, Triangle, Virginia 22172.
