Kenneth M. Powell, Sr.

Kenneth Martin Powell, Sr., age 61, led a remarkable life, filled with dedication to his family, his profession and community. He entered eternal rest on Friday, June 14, 2024, at his home. Kenneth affectionately known as “Peanut,” was the fourth child born to the late Joseph and Louise Powell in Washington, DC on August 4, 1962. He graduated from Anacostia High School, home of the Indians, in 1980. His academic journey led him to the Diesel Institute of America, where he earned a diploma and the title of certified Diesel Mechanic. Kenneth embarked on his professional path as a Sales Representative, first with Bonton Snacks, followed by Wonder Bread/Hostess Cakes and concluded his career at ADT Security Services. Kenneth’s life was not just about work; he was a 5th Degree Knights of Columbus. His commitment to service was evident when he volunteered to coach for the CYO youth basketball at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. He was an avid sports enthusiast as he was also a baseball Umpire for several years representing the youth baseball league of Maryland. His love for sports was immense, enjoying baseball, football, and basketball. Although he was a Dallas Cowboy “fanatic,” he began his young career working as a vendor for the Washington Redskins at the JFK stadium. Whether he was playing, coaching, or spectating, His favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys along with the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. His favorite past-time was playing the Maryland Lottery and hanging with friends on “Bay Lane” or “Betty Ford” as well as his favorite drink Remy Martin 1738. His personal life flourished when he wed Chandra Powell on September 28, 1991. This union brought joy with two children: his daughter Cameia Hawkins and his son, Kenneth Powell, Jr. Kenneth Powell Sr. is leaving behind a legacy of love and memories, survived by his wife of 32 years Chandra, daughter, Cameia, son Kenneth, Jr., Sister Sheila Powell-Moody, four nephews Ramon Queen, Reginald Bailey, Steven Williams, Dante Williams, Devon Moody: sister-in-law Karen Harris. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Louise Powell, two brothers Ronald Queen, Sr, and Steven Powell and a nephew Ronald Queen, Jr.
