Joseph Henry Herbert

Joseph “Joe” Henry Herbert transitioned peacefully on January 29, 2025. Joe was affectionately known to his siblings, family and friends as “Baby Brother.” He was the second oldest of seven children born to the late Henry and Florence (Snowden) Herbert and he was loved and adored by his siblings and his parents. Joe was born and raised in Bowie, Maryland where he attended school in Prince George’s County. On August 19, 1966, Joe married the love of his life, Marlene Holman and to this union one child, their loving daughter, Katrina Melora Herbert was born. He also helped raise Marlene’s son, Kelvin Holman (deceased) as his own. Joe was a loving husband and father who worked hard to provide for his family. After honorably serving in the Army as a Private First Class soldier from 1950-1953, Joe began his corporate work life at the Curtis Brothers Furniture Store in Washington D.C. Curtis Brothers was a pillar in the community that served as a symbol of economic growth and opportunity. The store survived the riots in 1968 and eventually folded in the mid 1970s. After Curtis Brothers closed, Joe began working at Miller’s Furniture Store in Washington, D.C., and he finished his career at Computer Science Corporation as a mailroom clerk until he retired. As a young man, Joe and his family loved attending Cabarets and hosting friends and family in their home. They loved to dance, play cards and have a good time! His absolute favorite pastime was watching his beloved Washington Redskins (currently the Commanders) play football. He was an avid fan and he never wavered in his support for the home team. Family was extremely important to Joe, and he made sure that everyone felt the love. His two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he cherished the time he spent with them. Joe leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Marlene Herbert; daughter, Katrina M. Herbert; two grandchildren Brittany Herbert-Wells (Carlos) and Courtney Herbert; three great-grandchildren, Khalil Wells, Cheyenne Wells and Cali Wells; two sisters, Delores Herbert and Bernadette Catten; four sisters-in-law, Yvonne Herbert; Delores Heyward; Erma Brown; Virginia Holman; and one brother-in-law, Emmanuel Holman; and a host of nieces and nephews. Four siblings preceded him in death, Stanley Herbert, Roscoe Herbert, Doris Gray and Thaddeus Herbert. Joe’s legacy of love, dedication and service to his family and his community will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
