James Linwood Harris

Whereas God in His infinite wisdom called our loved one home to rest, we bow in humble submission, to His holy will. James Linwood Harris Jim, affectionately known as ?Lin?, the son of the late Ernest Claude Harris and Ruth Thompson Harris, was born June 16, 1934 in South Mills, North Carolina. He departed this life on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was educated in the North Carolina school system. In 1953 he graduated from Rosenwald High School in South Mills. He continued his education at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Two years later, he volunteered for service in the Air Force during the Korean War. While in service, he married his childhood sweetheart, Constance Taylor. Upon completion of his military service, he journeyed to Washington, DC. His professional career began at the United States Postal Service. Soon thereafter, he began working at the Department of Commerce in the Office of Publications. In 1974, he completed his education at Washington Technical Institute where he acquired his Associates degree in Applied Science, specializing in Printing and Publishing. Ultimately, he ascended to Chief of the Micrographics and Printing Division in Springfield, Virginia. He retired in 1988 after thirty-five years of government service. His Christian experience began at an early age at the New McBride A.M.E. Zion Church in South Mills. He was a member of the Youth Choir and participated in many other activities. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of fifty years, Constance; two sons, Jonathan of Alexandria, Virginia and Tyrone of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; one brother, Dr. Johnie Harris of Silver Spring, Maryland; one aunt, Lizzie Mae Jackson of Portsmouth, Virginia; four sisters-in-law, Mattie Harris, Fay Slade, Delores Hines and Odessa Manley; two brothers-in-law, Clifton Slade and Hunster Manley; one aunt-in-law, Alvera Thompson; one uncle-in-law, Edward Taylor; many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and a goddaughter, India Barnes. We, his family who knew and loved him, will surely miss him. Although we realize the God we serve has never made a mistake and one day we all must surrender to His will.
