Helen Freeman

Helen Freeman was born in Orange, Virginia, on November 23, 1922 to the late Sadie E. Johnson. She peacefully departed this life at the Washington Home on January 2, 2011. Helen was the second of three children. As a young woman she attended public school in the Washington, D.C. area and later married Robert L. Freeman on October 21, 1942. They were married for 68 wonderful years. She worked many years for the Vice-President of the Washington Post as a domestic and also provided child care for many families within the Washington, DC area. Helen was a very well read and cultured woman who held many interests. She and her husband enjoyed many of the cultured events offered in the Nations Capital such as their interest in jazz, plays, and many social venues in the upper N.W. corridor. She and her husband were members of the Charlin Jazz Society and she was an active member of the Garfield Community Cheer Club in Southeast Washington. During her retirement, she participated in the planning of various day trips at the Columbia Senior Center and participated in cultural events in the Washington, D.C. area. Helen (along with her husband) loved to entertain and also enjoyed food, fun, and friends. She was a great cook. She was a devoted daughter, relative and friend and was willing to assist anyone in need. She had a way of making those around her laugh and also had a special way of connecting with kids. As a resident of the Washington Home, Helen was an active participant of many of the activities offered by the nursing home. She participated in games, enjoyed musical selections, holiday parties, ice cream socials and many other activities. In addition, she faithfully attended Sunday church services in which she professed that “God is God” no matter what the denomination. Helen’s faith as a Christian is what carried her through the difficult times, yet she truly enjoyed every moment of life. Helen is survived by her devoted husband Robert L. Freeman and is preceded in death by her mother Sadie E. Johnson and brothers Marvin Jones and Louis Edward Johnson. She is also survived by her devoted friend, Clara S. Coleman (Shirley), who stayed at her side throughout her entire illness, her cousins Josephine Chapman, Kenneth Jones, Ophelia Hayes, Joseph Bundy, and Gwendolyn Jones and her goddaughter Denise (Marcus) Shellman and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
