Harris Lee Lanier

Harris Lee Lanier, son of the late Vivian T. Lanier and Embry Fitzgerald, Sr., was born on May 8, 1950, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his son, Reginald T. Lanier. Harris departed this life on April 11, 2025, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Harris graduated from Phelps Career Vocational High School in Washington, D.C. Shortly after graduation, he was employed with the United States Post Office as a mail carrier until he left to pursue a career as a firefighter with the District of Columbia Department of Fire & Emergency Medical Services (DCF&EMS). He retired from DCF&EMS in 1997 as a Fire Inspector. Harris was not one to sit idle. Shortly after retirement, he was employed with MONA Electrical Services as a Project Manager/Fire Safety Consultant until he resigned in 1999. In February 2000 he sought employment and was hired as a Supervisory Fire Protection Systems Inspector with the DC Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs/Building & Land Regulations Administration until December 2002. In April 2003, Harris established his own company, Inspections Group, LLC where he continued to serve the business community in fire safety until his health began to decline. He was licensed in DC and Maryland as a Fire Plans Examiner and Fire Inspector. He attended the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute and received his certification as Fire Inspector I. Throughout his career, Harris was a consummate public servant. He was a member of the DC Fire Fighters Association, Local 36, National Fire Protection Association, Maryland Association of Home Inspectors, American Society of Home Inspectors, Mid-Atlantic Chapter and the International Code Council. He enjoyed the work he did and loved people. Always willing to serve wherever needed. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted and loving wife, Deborah of the home, eight grandchildren, Skye, Avyon, Tyree, Iyana, Kylee, Joy, Tyson and Yale, three uncles, Lawrence Lanier of Washington, DC, Ronnie Lanier (Della) and Thomas Lanier of Java, Virginia, three Godchildren, Aaryn, Justin and Shane Godby and a host of other relatives and friends.
