George Earl Standard Obituary George Earl Standard passed away peacefully on the morning of April 8, 2023 in Silver Spring, Maryland. George was born on September 1, 1933 in a quaint home in East Orange, New Jersey to Ann Laura Standard and Dalton Standard. George Standard was a practical man of faith and determination who unselfishly dedicated his time and talents to his family, friends and community. He spent his formative years in Brooklyn, New York graduating from Boys High School. He developed a strong work ethic as a child from his family and began working at the young age of nine. Later he worked in his family’s store and was especially proud that it was one of the first black-owned sporting good businesses in Brooklyn, New York. George was a devoted husband to his wife Lenore Standard of 67 years and a guiding father to their two children, Dawn Kountz and Mark Standard. He took pride in being a family man and made sure that his family had a loving, warm and comfortable home. His close knit family lived in their home in Cambria Heights, New York for 26 years. Along with George’s work ethic and determination, he had a sense of independence and entrepreneurship. He successfully built and owned a taxi and limousine business for over 40 years which provided the means for a good life for his family. Together, George and Lenore instilled in their children and other family members the value of education. They also gave their children, grandchildren and extended family exciting real-life experiences including, summer-long road trips around the United States. He also enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife and lifelong friends. At the age of 62, George and his wife retired to Florida. In retirement, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures: diving into the New York Times, savoring a walnut ice cream sundae, listening to his favorite jazz artists, and exploring the aisles of Home Depot. He enjoyed working with his hands. He could have been a star on HGTV. Most of all, he relished spending time with his loved ones. Children appreciated his patience and kind spirit. Some of his happiest moments were reading to his granddaughters or teaching them to perfect a backstroke in his immaculately clean swimming pool. A man of quiet calmness George also possessed a thoughtful wit. Family and friends would often visit him to share stories, mainly to seek his advice. There over a game of chess or cards he would listen attentively, with the beautiful melodious sounds of Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn or Miles Davis. Then it was his turn to speak. Though he was a man of few words, his advice was profound and impactful. George was intuitive; a gifted listener and trusted confidant to many in search of comfort and wisdom. He was a lifelong sports fan. In his younger years, he especially loved playing baseball and coaching his son’s Little League team. In his later years, tennis became a passion. He played for a short while and then became the ultimate fan watching the Tennis Channel for hours. He loved to discuss the players, the game and he could always bring you up-to-date on the latest statistics and rankings. George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend to many. To cherish his memories, he leaves behind his wife, two children, three grandchildren, in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. George Earl Standard, Dad and Papa will be greatly missed, but his spirit lives on in those whose lives he touched.
