Garneth Valentine

Baltimore native and mother of four, GARNETH THERESA VALENTINE (née Jones) passed away on February 15, 2023, at the age of 82. She died quietly at home surrounded by loved ones. She was the daughter of Beatrice and Ronnie Jones and the widow of James John Valentine. Mrs. Valentine was raised in Baltimore and attended St. Pius Catholic School. She spent most of her career in the telecommunications industry and retired from Verizon (formerly C&P Telephone). After retirement, she still took several years and had time and energy to care for two adorable children, Zoey and Khaylin, who are now grown. They loved her dearly and called her Grandma Garneth. She considered them like family members. Mrs. Valentine loved dogs and children and was also a supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Center for many years. Naturally smart, reserved, and empathic, Mrs. Valentine cared for a number of people during her lifetime. She was a great cook and loved old movies – especially Westerns. Sam Cooke was her favorite singer. As they say – to know her was to love her. She also loved dancing and was quick to smile lighting up the room. You could see her many days working in the garden outside, planting flowers and pulling weeds. She was a selfless person. If you liked something she wore or owned, she would, no doubt, offer to give it to you. If you wanted something to eat, she would offer to fix it for you. Later in life, she became very interested in politics and would have deep and lengthy discussions about the current and future situation of our city and local and national politicians. She is preceded in death by her oldest son Frederick Knuckles Jr. She is survived by three daughters, Tamara Brown (Carlos), Victoria Knuckles and Kathy Ducassou (Didier); two grandchildren, Derek (Asia) and Sean Brown; four great-grandchildren, Justin, Derek Jr., Zeidon and Amina; three sisters, Elizabeth Gladney (Marc), Beatrice Watkins and Shirley Brooks; and a host of other friends and relatives. For anyone who did not know her well, they have regrettably missed a precious opportunity.
