Emerson Hughes Burrell Sr.

Emerson Hughes Burrell, Sr. was born on November 23, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Roland and Maude (Wallace) Burrell. He departed this life on January 6, 2025 in Columbia, Maryland Emerson attended Baltimore City schools throughout his primary and secondary education, culminating in his graduation from Baltimore City College high school in 1964. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served until 1968. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Emerson worked at the Social Security Administration in operations and information systems before retiring in 2007. In April 1971, Emerson married Bernadette (Daniels) Burrell - truly the love of his life. Together they built a home and life that served as the foundation for over 53 years of unforgettable memories for their children and grandchildren. Their home became the gathering place for their children's friends, and "Mr. & Mrs. Burrell" became surrogate parents, cooks, chauffeurs, and mentors for countless kids in the community. Emerson loved sports, especially baseball and football. He served as a recreation league coach for all of his children and went on to become the Commissioner of the local league for several years. He was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan, spending most Sundays during football season watching the games with his sons. Nothing meant more to Emerson than family. His greatest joy came when his family was together. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of eating, talking, and laughing with the people he loved most. And while most know Emerson for his easy-going nature, he was a fierce protector of his loved ones and didn't hesitate to lead the charge to ensure they were treated respectfully and justly. His discernment of right versus wrong served as his true north throughout his life - values that he passed on to his children and that continue to serve as guideposts for them today. Emerson's generosity, humility, patience, humor, loyalty, dependability, and unconditional love will forever be remembered by his wife Bernadette; children Pinkie (Burrell) Nolan, Emerson Burrell, Jr. and Erik Burrell; grandchildren Alexandra Burrell and Emerson Burrell, III; brother Roland Burrell, Jr.; sister Valerie (Burrell) Horne; son-in-law Norman Nolan, Jr.:; daughter-in-law Sheena (Coleman) Burrell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
