Doris G. Pegram

Doris Groomes Pegram, born on March 28, 1938, in Sykesville, Maryland, was the cherished first child of the late Melvin and Ruth Groomes She began her education in the Carroll County Public School system, attending Johnsville Elementary and Robert Moten High Schol. At the age of 16 Doris moved with her family to Baltimore, where she completed her high school education at Dunbar High School, graduating with honors in 1956, ranking 35th in her class. Pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse, Doris interned at Sinai Hospital and Provident Hospital in Baltimore during her final year of high school. Her hands-on experience in the medical field inspired her to become a licensed Radiology Specialist . In 1957, Doris married William Samuel Robertson. She became a loving mother to Crystal, Lorie, and Hope, along with her grandson Maurice. In 1975 she married the late Carlee W. Pegram and together they share 40 years of marriage. Doris dedicated many years to her career as a Radiology Specialist at Provident Hospital, where she formed lasting friendships with the late Dr. Curtis Adams, Mickey Cox, Colleen Burrell, and Vera Macer. She also worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she often spoke of the celebrities, she had the opportunity to ex-ray. Upon returning to Baltimore, Doris joined the Emergency Department at Franklin Square Hospital. Later, she became the Radiology Department Manager at Total Health Care Health Center, formerly known as Constant Care, where she created fond memories with the late Deaconess Mabel Brown, her dearest friend who she worshipped and socialized with. She was also very close with Dollene Stegman, whom she loved as a daughter. Doris also worked part-time at Eastside and Westside Medical Centers and continued her passion for radiology even after retirement by working as a mobile X-ray Specialist. Doris accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and was baptized at White Rock Methodist Church. After moving to Baltimore, she worshiped at Christ United Methodist Church, Little Ark Missionary Baptist Church, and Bethel Baptist Church of Mt Winans. She later became an active member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church, participating in the choir and other church activities. Under Pastor Donald Bates, she was thrilled to witness the completion of the new church building. In 2005, Doris relocated to Pittsburg, PA, where she joined Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor William Curtis. She held a special admiration for Pastor Curtis, wo shared her hometown Baltimore roots. At Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Doris became involved in the senior’s ministry (SOARS), mentorship program, and cell groups. She cherished her time at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, where she deepened her relationship with God and shared His word with everyone. On Saturday, November 16, 2024, Doris was called home by God, having completed her earthly assignment. She was preceded in death by her daughter Crystal Layton, her parents Melvin and Ruth Groomes, her husband Carlee Pegram, her sisters Joan Sims and Melvina Turner, and her brother-in-law Floyd Turner. Doris leaves behind a legacy cherished by her daughters Lorie and Hope, grandchildren Maurice Robertson, Reginald Lee II (a.k.a Allen), LaShala Lee (a.k.a Toy), and Lolita Lee (a.k.a Joy); great-grand-children Ashley Robertson, Aiden Philips, Leela Bryant, London Bryant , Selena Phillips, Phoenix Robertson, and Amari Robertson; her adopted sister Barbara Richardson; her host of nieces and nephews; and cousins she loved as siblings, including Barbara (Kitty) Jones, Regina (Jeannie) Colbert, William, and Gary Hudson. She will be dearly missed by her church families at Mt. Ararat and Mt. Hope and all the friends, family and mentorship families hearts she touched.
