Doris Hinton

Doris Veronica Hinton was born on August 4, 1928, to the late George and Mary Freeland. Her siblings that preceded her in death include Eugene Freeland, Mary Hawkins, Thomas G. Freeland, Marie Walker, Catherine Schools, and Augustus Freeland (her twin). Raised in Seat Pleasant, Maryland by the late Frances and Mildred Hance, Doris married Zenepha Turner; and out of that union was born Zenepha and Doris. She later married the late Major Hinton, Sr; and from that union were born Frank, Major Jr, Darcella, Stanley, and Lilly. Doris worked in retail throughout her life, spending several years at Hecht’s, Woodies and finally at Shoe Parlor prior to retiring to Norfolk in 2006. She was always trusted and relied upon to often manage various aspects of her work area without assistance. At home, Doris always loved to entertain. She and her late husband, Major Hinton Sr, often hosted gatherings of family and friends. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year were always celebrated at the Hinton home. After Major’s passing, Doris continued to show her love for family and friends through her cooking and baking skills, hosting family holidays and baking her famous chocolate, pineapple, and coconut cakes for birthdays of all she loved. If she ever made you one, you never forgot it and usually asked for another one at some time or another! In addition to her family and friends, Doris loved the Lord and served Him in whatever capacity she could, including as part of the Flower Guild and choir at Bethesda Baptist Church in Washington DC under Pastor John Bussey. When the family moved to Maryland, she attended Kettering Baptist Church and later joined First Baptist Church of Glenarden, serving under the late Pastor Johnson and Pastor John Jenkins. At First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Doris continued her path of service as a member of the Nursing Home Ministry, the Sr. Choir and assisting with the Sunbeams Children’s choir. After retiring, Doris moved to Norfolk, VA where she joined the Endtime United Ministries under Pastor Emeritus Joyce Washington. There she continued working with the Nursing Home Ministry and the Card Ministry, while assisting with the Outreach Ministry whenever possible. Doris served meals for the Loving Steps Program’s Christmas dinners and was always eager to help the community. Doris is survived by her remaining children, Zenepha Turner-Calhoun, Doris Holmes, Major Hinton Jr, Darcella Hinton, Stanley Hinton and Lilly Smith (Donald, Sr); her grandchildren, Errin Holmes (Dinara), Adina Holmes, Keisha Jones (Dexter), Duane Hinton (Travena), LaTonya “Nikki” Hinton, Donald Smith Jr, Lakeisha “Kee” Hinton, Dana Smith and Zenepha Calhoun; 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
