Clyde C. Aveilhe

Clyde C. Aveilhe, a cherished father, grandfather, husband, and lifelong advocate for educational equity, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Dilworth, daughters, Lisa Marie Aveilhe and Kelley Lynn Shangle, granddaughter, Sydney Aveilhe Pridgen; sister, Nancy V. Hall (James W.), nieces, Nancy L. Williamson (Dalton), Angela A. Hall, nephew, James Wesley Hall, and their many offspring. Heather Wade Aveilhe, his wife of 26 years, preceded him in death and his marriage to Claudia Knox (James E. Boddie) ended in divorce. Each union produced a wonderful, loving daughter. Clyde was born and raised in Washington D.C. by parents Arthur St. Clair and Sydney F. Campbell Aveilhe. He and his siblings Javan Anderson, Arthur, Nancy, and Sydney lived in the far northeast section of the city. He was an exceptionally good student educated in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), Dunbar Senior High School, and Howard University and completed degrees at a lightning speed. He earned his doctorate degree from George Washington University. Clyde had a long and stellar professional career. He has been recognized for his many successes in promoting equal education opportunity and is fondly remembered by the many who he mentored over time. He began his career as a teacher with the District of Columbia Public Schools. He then pursued work as an administrator at Howard University as Assistant Director of Admissions and then as Director of Student Affairs. He served as Associate Director of the city’s inaugural equal employment opportunity center (EEOC) and was recruited by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) as the Government Relations Associate Director for the Washington D.C. office. He was appointed to lead the D.C. Governmental Relations Office of the California State University (CSU) System and retired as Government Relations Director for the D.C. office of The City University of New York (CUNY). A memorial mass will be held on Friday, November 15th, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and services at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 1419 V St NW, Washington, D.C. 20009.
