Cedric Len Smith

Cedric Len Smith was born on January 26, 1955, in Washington, DC, and peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. His family lovingly referred to him as Len, deriving from his middle name. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Seleria Smith, his sister, Barbara Ann Moton, niece, Rhonda Lashawn Moton and great nephew, James Robert Moton. Len loved exploring Washington, DC when he was younger. He frequently visited the National Mall, museums and monuments. He also, loved fishing with his father. In 1974, he enlisted in the District of Columbia Army National Guard. Following his honorable discharge, Len faced ongoing health challenges with remarkable courage and resilience. Although his career path was unconventional, he exhibited a deep commitment to his community and a generous spirit. He was a familiar figure at the local corner store, actively supported former owners, and devoted countless hours to helping neighbors maintain their homes and yards. Many years ago, a neighborhood friend affectionately gave him the nickname "Hamburger," a name many people still use when reflecting on his memory. Len had a profound love for his family and always sought to bring joy to everyone, particularly during special occasions like birthdays, graduations, and Christmas. He possessed remarkable artistic talent, with a passion for drawing and abstract painting—a gift he lovingly passed on to his son Jerome and his niece Tanya. A true Washingtonian at heart, Len was a devoted Commanders fan and enjoyed cheering on the home team with his brother, Gordon. With a deep love for the Lord, Len strengthened his faith by reading from one of his many Bibles and spiritual books. Before moving to the Bloomingdale neighborhood in 1966, he attended Eureka Baptist Church and Southern Baptist Church with his family. He later spent several years at St. George's Episcopal Church before joining Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in 2009. Len enjoyed attending services, often with his mother, until her passing. Despite his health struggles, his faith remained unwavering. Len is survived by his son, Jerome Cedric White; his sister, Mary Catherine (Cathy) Thompson (Rex); his brother, Gordon P. Smith; his grandchildren, Vania, Jerome Jr., Michiah, Roman, Eli, and Ethan; eight great-grandchildren; his nieces Tanya and Nina; his nephews Kevin and Lawrence; great-nieces Eboné, Chantel, Arlisa, Jasmin, and Kellin; great-nephews Dwayne Jr. and Kevin II; and his aunt Mary. All of them will cherish his memory and lasting legacy.
