Catherine P Coates

Catherine Phillips Coates, was born on December 6, 1931 to Ralph Lee Phillips Sr. and Isabel Young Phillips in Winston-Salem, NC. Catherine graduated from Carver High School in Winston Salem, NC and was voted Superlative Most Popular Girl. Catherine attended and was a proud graduate of Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Nursing School, affectionately known as “Katie B”. Catherine relocated to Washinton, DC and worked various jobs prior to being hired at George Washington (GW) University Hospital, as a Utilization Review (UR) Registered Nurse (RN) for the Orthopedic Department. Catherine retired from GW in 1993. After retirement Catherine volunteered at Stoddard Nursing Home proving recreational activities to the residents. As a RN, Catherine’s mentorship to colleagues, compassion, dedication to healing and caring; gentle hands and kind heart touched countless lives throughout her career. Catherine’s achievement as a Charge Nurse and was a high accomplishment where she provided leadership, problem-solving, and high levels of responsibility at George Washington University Hospital. Catherine took great pride in her profession as a Registered Nurse. Catherine loved the Lord and was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, in Washington, DC. Catherine married the love of her life; Herman M. Coates Sr in 1958. From that union the other light of her life was her son, Herman Jr; who she doted over. Catherine truly loved her grandchildren. There was nothing Catherine would not do for family or friends; and if she could do it or give it … it was done. Catherine will be missed by all who knew and loved her outspoken and witty spirit. Catherine, a cherished grandmother, sister, friend and beloved servant of God passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025 at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation. She is preceded in death by her parents; Herman Maurice Coates Sr, Husband; Herman Maurice Coates Jr, Son; Herman Maurice Coates III, Grandson; Ralph Lee Phillips, and Ervin Daniel Phillips, Brothers. Memories will be cherished by her grandchildren Maurice A. (Faterah) Coates; Upper Marlboro, MD, Jana Coates, Janaire (Lionel) Watkins, Von Coates, Michael S. (Charmaine) Ware; Hopkinsville, KY; and Raven (Shane Walters) Rush, Washington, DC, a host of great grandchildren; Sisters; Fannie P. Peeple, Winston-Salem, NC, Treva P. Rainey, Upper Marlboro, MD, Brother; William Phillips Sr, Winston-Salem, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
