Carstell Pitts

Carstell Pitts departed this life on November 27, 2023, at the age of 85. He was born on July 24, 1938, in Newberry, South Carolina to Malawyer Pitts and Jeannie Bell Pitts. Early in Carstell’s life, the family moved to Washington D.C where he lived his youth, enjoying sports and playing the drums. He graduated from Dunbar High School. While in attendance at Dunbar he excelled in track and football. After a football injury, he focused his attention on track and his exceptional performance awarded him a scholarship to Emporia State University in Kansas. After attending college, he worked several jobs before beginning his career working at the United States Postal Service. After 40 years of dedicated service, Carstell retired from the US Postal Service in 2001. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. Carstell loved spending time with his family, sharing stories and watching football. He was always there to of er guidance, support, and encouragement no matter what challenges they faced. He was a strong patriarch of his family, and a good friend to all that knew him. He met and married the love of his life, Lula Pitts. Together their family grew to include three children, Ben, Beatrice, and Marcus. Through this union they lived, loved and supported each other faithfully for over 49 years. Carstell’s favorite pastimes were working in the yard, bowling, completing crossword puzzles, exercising, and watching western movies. He enjoyed his favorite shows daily Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. Before the NFL game on Sunday, Carstell enjoyed listening to his gospel music and WHUR’s Sunday Worship Service at Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel. Carstell was a strong, proud, and good man. He is loved and will be missed by many. He is preceded in death by his parents, Malawyer and Jeannie Bell Pitts; son, Marcus Pitts; two brothers, Milton Pitts, John Pitts; two sisters, Dareather Lowe and Helen Pitts Gilchrist. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Lula Pitts; son, Ben (Lorena); daughter Beatrice; one brother Harvey Pitts; one sister in-law Mary; seven grandchildren, Marquis’, Aliyah, Rashad, Ahmad, Milan, Asia, and Makayla; three great-grandkids: Kingston, Jamir and Nylah and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Carstell's memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
