Bertha M. Williams

Bertha M. Williams was born May 4,1938, the youngest girl of fourteen children in Sumter, South Carolina to Willie and Rebecca Nelson. On Monday evening October 27,2025, Bert as she was lovingly called by her family and friends, went home to meet God, for a well- deserved rest. With her whole heart she married Eugene M. Williams on November 30, 1963. He affectionately called her “Lil Mama”, and she was a devoted wife and friend to him for thirty – three years. Their son, Christopher Williams proceeded her in death. Bert received her education through the Sumter South Carolina School System and enjoyed family time, traveling to Myrtle Beach and other states to connect with family and friends. Bert never passed a shoe store or mall she didn’t like and was always stylish. She can be quoted saying “I had holes in my shoes growing up and when I could do better, I made sure it would never happen again to me or my children”. Southern hospitality was always on display when you entered the home on Sunset Road. Bert’s first question was, “are you hungry?” followed by, “Do you want some iced tea?” Bert always wanted you to feel at home. She would often say, “Come sit at the kitchen table or on the front porch and stay awhile”. On Sundays and holidays, she would always throw down in the kitchen for the family with fresh greens (out of the garden), macaroni and cheese, and smothered pork chops with gravy. Gardening was Bert’s favorite past time. She could often be found in her yard tending to her flowers and vegetable garden. Giving back and assisting neighbors, friends and even strangers gave Bert joy. She would always say, “everybody needs help sometimes.” Bertha retired from Spring Field State Hospital in May 2002 after twenty-seven years of state service. Bertha loved the Lord God with all her heart and was a faithful member of The Bibleway Freewill Baptist Church for over forty years, serving as an usher, missionary and choir member. She later began attending The Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church where she remained a faithful member until her health prevented her from doing so. Bertha believed prayer could change any situation and she knew with God all things are possible. To carry on her memory, she leaves: four grandchildren Antwan, Christopher, Tiffany and Breasia. Eight great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, one sister Thelma Hodge, and three brothers Robert (Elaine), George and Clifton Nelson (Sharon).
