Annie L. Ellis

Annie Lea Ellis was born on June 26, 1937 to the late Velma Lee Huey and Clarence Johnson in Willie Point, TX. Annie lost her birth mother during delivery and was adopted and cared for by her father and stepmother Vestula Thompson. From that union Annie was blessed with a sister, Evelyn Marie Hawkins who preceded her in death. Annie peacefully entered heavens gates on Monday, January 15, 2018. As a young lady, she married Vernon Augusta Sr. and to this union a son, Vernon Jr was born. They later divorced. Then she married the love of her life, Lawrence W. Ellis, Jr., a 30 year Air Force Veteran who she affectionally called Tanuki he preceded her in death and from this union, they shared one beautiful daughter Susan. Annie and Tanuki later relocated to Washington, D.C. where he continued his military career and she began working as a cook at the Joint Base Andrews and Bolling Air Force Base after 25 years of service Annie retired. But, she wasn’t done yet – always so independent and wanting to stay active she continued cooking for Prince George’s Public Schools at Friendly High School. Annie loved the Lord and attending church services at Union Temple Church but when she couldn’t make she would faithfully attend Bible Study and Prayer services at Chestnut Oaks. She liked doing many things and one was proudly talking about her grandson Robert. She was so happy when he decided on a military career just like his grandad. While at Chestnut Oaks she also enjoyed bingo, dancing, a good hand of cards, and volunteering at Chestnut Oaks. Annie was delightfully friendly and wanted to make everyone a friend of hers. She was one of the first residents to move into the newly built Chestnut Oaks Adult Community she was so excited to live next door to her good friend Dell. Ms. Annie soon became quite comfortable “feeling right at home” she participated in all the community activities. There wasn’t a movie, dance, party or celebration she didn’t miss. She would come to the parties on time and dressed to the nines! After leaving cooking for PG County Schools Annie volunteered to host “Coffee and Chat” and help out in the office at Chestnut Oaks. Faithfully she would set up at 6am and shop for treats for the residents when she could. Ms. Annie loved and enjoyed her friends at Chestnut Oaks. She would always joyfully sing the line…. “And I’m so grateful”. She leaves to cherish memory her children, Vernon Augusta, Jr. of New Orleans, LA and Susan Ellis Porter (Terry) of Fort Washington, MD, grandchildren Robert Lawrence Turner, Rhudell Bookman-Matthews, Sisters-In-Law, Maxine Kelly of Washington, DC, Annie Ellis (Horace) of Petersburg, VA, Brother-in-law, Charlie Ellis of Petersburg, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Annie had many special family and friends, Dr. Sylvia Medley, Gregory Philips, Mr. Gillom Smith, Tee Jackson, Pauline Mingo, Margo Cheaves, Shirley Butler, Brenda Williams, her Chestnut Card Club Family, Terri Bridgeman(Babygirl), Norvain Morgan (Grasshopper), Tammi and so many others.
