Mrs. Alma W. Barber

Alma Barber was born in Talladega, Alabama November 19, 1931 to Tom and Lizzie Woods. Her dad passed away shortly afterwards, and her mom remarried. Alma was one of ten children. She graduated from Schenley High School in Pittsburgh, PA. as she spent her high school years living with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. Upon graduation she moved to Washington, DC and began her career as a secretary in the Federal Government working for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon where she met her husband, Richard Barber. It was out of this union she was blessed with two children Tyrone and Katrina. She truly enjoyed her career in the Federal Government and upon retiring, just after two years she returned to the workforce part time working at the Environmental Protection Agency because she enjoyed being around people. She worked there until her husband became ill. She enjoyed gardening in her spare time and she passed that talent on to her daughter. She also enjoyed cooking and she was a good cook. Her daughter is still trying to master her mom’s macaroni and cheese and potato salad recipes. (lol). She was an avid football fan, both Collegiate and Professional and she enjoyed discussing the outcomes of the games with her son. Her favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. She also enjoyed serving the poor, visiting the sick and shut-in and reading her bible. She was both a devoted mother and grandmother who loved the Lord Jesus Christ. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Richard Barber in 2009. She departed this life on April 15, after a six week health battle in which she endured hospitalizations at three different hospitals, and one skilled Rehab facility until she succumbed to her illness at Suburban Hospital, in Bethesda, Maryland. She was a woman of faith and a fighter. She fought hard to get the victory over her illness as she enjoyed life and her family and looked forward to returning home, but it wasn’t meant to be. It was her zeal for living and God’s grace that rewarded her with a long life of 92 years. She leaves to cherish her memories to her children, Tyrone Barber and Katrina Barber, daughter-in-law LaTonya (Toni Barber), her grandchildren, Ariel Barber and Blaire Barber, two sisters, Earlene Christian, Barbara Lane (Sherman) and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
