Veris R. Lee

On September 22, 2021, God summoned unto His Presence, his faithful servant, Veris Roberts Lee. Veris was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 16, 1937 as the fifth of nine children of William L. Roberts, Sr. and Alice Thompson Roberts. Veris was blessed to be the middle child in a loving and supportive family with her 6 sisters, 1 older Brother and 1 younger Brother. She attended Baltimore City Schools and was a proud graduate of Frederick Douglass High School Class of 1955. She pursued her college career at Coppin State Teachers College (now Coppin State University) graduating in 1959 with a Bachelors in Elementary Education. Veris was a dedicated professional educator. She spent 46 years teaching, mentoring, and assisting teachers in the Baltimore City School Systems. Throughout her career, she continued to advance her education, earning three Master Degrees and numerous certifications in Reading and Elementary Education from Coppin State, Towson University, University of MD, and Johns Hopkins University. She was also a lecturer at Morgan State University and the first ever Educational Specialist for the Baltimore City Department of Social Services. Veris accepted Christ as a teenager and became a very active member at Sharp Street Memorial United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and facilitated many After School Programs and Youth Summer Camps. Following her retirement, Veris became a member of Northwood Appold United Methodist Church, where she served as Director of a Church-wide Marriage and Family Relations Program. She also worked at the Church’s Charter School. For many, many years, Veris was an active participant in a prayer line each morning. She loved the interactions with all of the members of the line and continued her involvement until her passing. For close to ten years Veris hosted a radio show on WEAA Radio, entitled “Love and Happiness.” Veris’ political activism was an essential part of her life. In 2007, Veris co-founded, “The Baltimore Women for Obama” along with her lifelong friend, Alice Torriente, and that organization was acknowledged as having been instrumental in Obama’s election in Maryland. In March 1982, Veris and her older Sister, Dr. Geraldine Waters,along with 23 other Ladies were inducted into the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was an active member for almost 40 years and served in numerous roles and on key committees including the Connections Committee, the Scholarship Committee, and as the Graduate Advisor for the Alpha Delta Chapter at Morgan State University. In 2017 (and until her passing), she became a member of the Philomathians” sponsored by Dr. Ruthe T. Sheffey and her Sister Dr. Geraldine Waters. The joy of Veris’ life was sharing the company and fellowship of her sisters and other family members. They loved to go to local restaurants. The family hosted an Annual July 4th Cookout that brought friends and colleagues from miles away to partake of the festivities. She was also an avid traveler. Some of her more extensive traveling experiences included trips to Africa, and numerous trips to Cuba and several Caribbean countries. Her most memorable trip was when she traveled to Germany for the wedding of her niece, Nicole Airi Parker, to Boris Kojoe. Veris enjoyed a blessed and prosperous life. She leaves to cherish her life: 4 Sisters: Dr. Geraldine R. Waters, Carolyn M. Roberts, Hilda (Jane) R. Wood and Alma Roberts, 1 Brother-in-Law William Wood, 14 nieces and nephews, Sorors, Church, Civic, and Political Friends and Associates.
