Sandra D. Rogers

Mrs. Sandra Darnell Rogers suddenly and peacefully passed away on January 1, 2024 at the age of 76. Sandra was born on December 10, 1947 to the late James and Mazell Cross. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C. where she graduated from Dunbar Senior High School. She also attended Howard University for a semester where she studied Nursing. Sandra, also known as Sandy & Mama Rogers, married Leroy Rogers at the age of 17. They lived in Oxon Hill, Maryland where she got pregnant. She had her first and only child, Ericka, at the age of 25. After her divorce, she would relocate to Capital Heights, Maryland where she would spend most of her time working and raising her daughter. Sandra worked most of her life. She started out as a Clerk Typist at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., eventually becoming a Computer Analyst with a private company in Bethesda, Maryland, and finally as an Executive Secretary for 20+ years with the Department of the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in downtown Washington, D.C. She retired in the early 2000’s. Soon after, she did some part-time work at Target & Kohl’s. However, she would soon retire again…for good, so that she could spend more time with her grandchildren. Sandra was a jokester and the person who could add humor to any room. Her leisure time consisted of shopping, spoiling her daughter, her grandchildren, her god-children, and other family members. She had a huge heart which always led her to help others whether she was celebrating their birthday or celebrating their most recent accomplishment. She would always find a way to make people feel special. She was so generous that she would constantly & consistently send donations to various religious organizations and organizations dedicated to doing research to help children. It did not matter how much money she had in her account. She would always find a way to help someone . Sandra would began to fully extend her generosity by becoming affiliated with a church. She decided to become an active and faithful member of Theocracy Christian Center located in Capitol Heights, Maryland under the leadership of Dr. Lumbus Burrell. Because of her commitment and active participation, she was later appointed to the position of Deaconness. Sandra was preceded in death by her loving parents, her sister, Barbara McManus; her brothers, James Cross, Jr. and Dennis Cross; and her sister-in-law, Gloria Cross. She is survived by her daughter, Ericka Young (Randolph); sisters, Alfredia McPhaul (Delcie), Kathy Scott (Robert), and Carolyn Coker (Timothy); grandchildren, Erick, Randolph, Jervon, & Randi Young; great-grandchildren, Zimiri Lee & Arielle Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
