Ruth Johnson Hill

RUTH JOHNSON HILL was one of nine children born to the late Corine Johnson Haywood and William Johnson in Manning, South Carolina on October 30, 1945. This loving and gentle woman, dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, caring sister and aunt, good friend, and Child of God, was called from this earthly labor to receive her heavenly reward on November 18, 2024. Ruth and her family relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in the mid 1940’s. She was born into a loving Christian family that believed in serving the Lord. Ruth was taught by her mother to pray and seek the Lord for guidance in every situation. This was a principle she followed through the years and continued into her adult life. Ruth received her early Christian training as a member of the United Glorious Church of Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop Joseph Dingle. She remained there as a member well into adulthood. It was there that a desire to work for the Lord began to flourish within her. In the year 1979, Ruth accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. From that point on, she “gave up the world” and “never looked back.” Ruth later became a member of First Baptist Church of Pimlico. She served under the leadership of Pastors Robert Savage, Anthony Dorsey, and Rod Horne, all of whom she highly respected and sat humbly under their biblical teachings. As a Member of First Baptist Church of Pimlico, Ruth served as a Watchcare Leader, Scholarship Committee Board Member, Junior Church Teacher, and usher. Ruth was a faithful and dedicated member. She loved the Lord and was always willing to share with others the goodness of the Lord and the need to be ready upon his return. Ruth was educated throughout the Baltimore City Public School System. She received her High School Diploma from Frederick Douglass High School. Due to her thirst for learning, she enrolled in Coppin State College (University), where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Ruth continued her educational journey at Morgan State College (University) and received her Master’s degree in Education from that institution. Later, she pursued doctoral studies in the field of education at Loyola University Maryland. She was an avid learner, and valued education as a doorway to achievement. Ruth was united in Holy Matrimony to her soul mate and the love of her life, Harrison H. Hill on January 4, 1975. Ruth and Harrison were inseparable and epitomized what it meant to be happily and faithfully married. They were true role models for other couples to follow. From this union, two children were born, Candace Joy and Christopher Harrison. Ruth loved her children unconditionally and always did her best to raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. She was very proud of them and was always giving God the glory for their accomplishments in life. Ruth had a very strong work ethic. One of the first jobs that she held was working as a store clerk at the Tommy Tucker Department Store on Pennsylvania Avenue. This job enabled her to work and attend college. After graduating from Coppin, he began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher at Springhill Elementary School in the Park Heights area of Baltimore City. Throughout the years, she had a desire to become an administrator. This desire, along with her work ethic, enabled her to be promoted to higher positions which included becoming a Master Teacher, and subsequently, the Assistant Principal of Dr. Roland N. Patterson Sr. Academy. It was from the position of Assistant Principal that she retired in 2003. Ruth was a warm and loving person. She enjoyed family gatherings and hosted the Annual Family Christmas Dinner at her home. Whenever there was a family affair, she could be counted upon to prepare something special to eat. Ruth was known for her delicious potato salad, chicken salad, salmon cakes, and fried fish. Everyone enjoyed her tasty dishes. Ruth enjoyed just “hanging out” with her sisters, shopping, playing card games with her Pokeno group, reading, traveling, and being in church services. She loved being in anointed services where the presence of Lord was evident. Ruth was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren that she was immensely proud of. She would gladly pull out her pictures so that she could tell you about them because she loved being a “Grandma.” Ruth also had the gift of “helps.” She was always willing to give to others and would “chip in” to help when something needed to be done. It didn’t matter who needed the help, or the cost involved, Ruth was ready to lend a helping hand. She will be sorely missed by so many that loved and cared deeply for her. While she has gone to join her parents, sisters Ada, Bernese, and Lucille; brothers, Willie and Samuel; she leaves to cherish her legacy, her devoted husband, Harrison H. Hill; loving children, daughter, Candace White (Clayton), son, Christopher Hill (Kimberly); grandchildren, Cailyn, Jackson, Jamison, and Colin; brothers, George Johnson (Verlina) and Charles Johnson; sister, Katherine Sykes (John); aunt, Lula Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and a loving church family.
