Ruth Lee Dixon

The beloved Ruth L. Simmons Dixon, 77, of Owings Mills, Maryland, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at 09:58 a.m. Ruth was born on January 15, 1944, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late George Rutherford and Lillian Simmons. As a young adult, Ruth moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, where she worked in a manufacturing plant and later employed at Christ Hospital as a Nurse Assistant. While in Jersey CIty, she was engrafted into a wonderful Christian family. Ruth eventually moved back to Charleston in 1967 where she met Cynthia Williams. And it was Ruth’s dear friend Cynthia, who introduced her to her future military husband, Darnell Dixon, in the fall of 1972. Darnell Sr. and Ruth wed March 31, 1973, in Charleston, South Carolina. God blessed this couple to raise five children: Christille Renee, Darnell Jr., Matthew Levi, Rachel Jasmine, and Elizabeth Lee. Ruth was a devoted wife and mother that was blessed with many God-given gifts. It was her attentiveness and nurturing spirit that allowed her to become a certified in-home daycare provider for military families in Newport, Rhode Island in 1993. She became well known and was in constant demand for child care services, always reaching the maximum allowance of children that can be cared for in the home. God also blessed Ruth with the gift of tenacity. This was evident in her pursuit to obtain her high school diploma. Obstacles arose in Ruth’s childhood which precluded her from having the traditional educational experience, but she didn’t give up. As an adult, Ruth enrolled in many adult education evening classes. In 2000, her tenacity and hard work paid off; Ruth received her high school diploma from Harcourt High School.Ruth deeply loved the Lord. She was an active and faithful member of The Holy Temple Church of our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith under the leadership of the late Bishop Randolph Goodwin. She was a praying woman. She enjoyed singing songs of Zion and immersed herself in Biblical teaching and reading. Ruth also loved to travel abroad. She toured places in England, France, Germany and Italy, just to name a few. Her favorite country was Spain because that was her first trip outside the country in 1994. In addition, her hobbies included sewing, making ceramics, and arranging gift baskets. In recent years, Ruth became a long-term resident of Levindale Geriatric Nursing Home in Baltimore, Maryland, where she received excellent care throughout her entire stay. And it is here that she was called home to be with her Lord and Savior. Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved daughters (Christille and Elizabeth), her parents (George Rutherford and Lillian Simmons), and her siblings (Shirley Booker, Loretta Badger and Jerry Hunter). She leaves to cherish her memories: Husband of 48 years, Darnell Dixon Sr.; children Darnell Jr. (Sheleen) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Matthew (Latrice) of Petersburg, Virginia; and Rachel (Hen) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; brothers, Castello Smith of Bronx, New York; Jerome Simmons of Rockville, Maryland; and Nathaniel Hunter of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Nicholas Proctor, Sydnie Mathews, Reagan Mathews, Dantea Dixon, and Patrick Dixon; special friend, Cynthia Williams of Annapolis Maryland; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and church family.
