Phyllis Dawes Stevenson

On January 4, 1956, PHYLLIS ANN DAWES was born to the late Thurman Ashley Dawes and Lydia Meeks Dawes in North Carolina. When she was one year old, her family moved to Maryland. Phyllis completed her education at Western High School before pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Science and Psychology at Towson University. She then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Adult Education Administration and Supervision from Coppin University. Deeply rooted in her faith, Phyllis experienced significant spiritual growth and took great pride in her heritage, raised within the church. She learned the value of prayer, scripture, and public speaking through her presentations in front of various audiences and congregations. Her family instilled in her the values of perseverance and leadership through prayer during challenging situations. In 1975, Phyllis became an active member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she dedicated herself to community service. Her journey began at Towson University, and she later became an integral member of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter. Throughout her years, she held various leadership roles as chair and co-chair on numerous boards and committees, passionately advocating for professional and political causes, all while embodying the spirit of servant leadership. Phyllis’ work made a significant impact, concentrating on social science research that addressed youth risk behaviors and empowered adults to obtain their Maryland high school diplomas. She devoted her life to spreading love through acts of service. In May 2005, she began a beautiful relationship with Thomas Stevenson, culminating in their marriage on May 8, 2014. Thomas, an Air Force veteran, was honored in a funeral service on November 22, 2024. Phyllis was preceded in rest by her parents Thurman Dawes and Lydia Meeks Dawes, her brother James Meeks and her sister Mamie Dawes. She leaves behind a legacy celebrated by her niece, Bisa Dawes, along with three extended family members Bianca Stevenson, Thomas Stevenson Jr., and Thomas Stevenson III. She is also survived by numerous cousins and members of the Siloam Freewill Baptist Church, alongside a wide circle of friends and supporters who offered love, assistance, and unwavering support throughout her illness
