Odessa Ann Spruill

ODESSA ANN SPRUILL was born October 14, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late George and Josephine Shearn. Odessa, fondly known as Dessie, was raised in West Baltimore and attended Friendship Baptist Church. It was there where she was baptized and accepted Christ. Dessie graduated from Frederick Douglass High School as well as attended Coppin State College. Shortly thereafter, she married the love of her life, the late Johnny Ray Spruill. Through their union of 48 years, four children were born. The young family settled in the community of West Hills in Baltimore City and established many lifelong friendships. A consummate nurturer, many neighborhood children enjoyed visiting the Spruill home to say hi to Ms. Odessa and Mr. John. For over thirty years, Odessa worked as an Office Support Specialist in the Baltimore City Public School System. Throughout her tenure in the school district, Odessa became more than a colleague, but a devoted friend to many. Moreover, she dedicated her time to the children by providing guidance, support and encouragement to any student who needed assistance. Dessie enjoyed traveling and was eager to explore new places. She took every opportunity to tour different destinations with her husband, family and friends. Although she enjoyed a range of travel experiences, her absolute favorite was the casino. Whether headed to the bright lights of Las Vegas or on a bus trip to Delaware Park, Dessie was always eager to play the slots. She was an avid reader of romance novels and enjoyed watching Western movies with her husband. Her infectious smile, humble heart and loving spirit will never depart from our memories. She will always leave an indelible mark in our lives. She leaves to mourn: four children, Johnny R. Spruill Jr., Derrick E. Spruill, Jermaine J. Spruill and Jennifer N. Spruill; grandchildren, Danaya S. Spruill, Kayla A. Miller, Jermaine Spruill Jr. and Melodi M. Spruill; great-grandchild, Jayla A. Clark; siblings, Michael Shearn (Joanne), Ronald Shearn (Connie), Barbara Shearn and Jacqueline Shearn (preceded in death by sister Helene Younger and brother-in-law Latin Younger). She also leaves to mourn sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends
