Maurice Roland Johnson "MOE" "REECE" "HOOK" Age 60 passed suddenly on Sunday, March 9, 2008. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife and companion of 23 years, Leslie Thompson Johnson. He is also survived by brothers, Carl Boise Gormes and James Bo Johnson and sister Mable Leggett. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Hattie and Sidney Johnson; brothers, Frank and Curtis Johnson; and sisters, Fanny Galloway, Colleen Gormes, Thelma Johnson, and Anne Mozet. He was a loving father of two daughters from his first marriage, Lennitta Bryant and Charnice Waters Dion of the local area; step daughters Julia Archer Brent of East Greenwich, R.I, Liz Morrow Garrett of San Diego, California, Catherine Kelley of Summerville, S.C., and stepson Bob Thompson Mary of Boise, Idaho. He also is survived by grandsons, Tayshon Powell, Nahshon Waters, and DeNai Johnson; granddaughters, Sierra and Diamond Battle; step-grandsons Andrew and Matthew Thompson, Troy Morrow, Grant and Nathan Archer; step-granddaughters Jennifer Duff Ricky, Tara Morrow, Sara and Hannah Thompson. He had three step-great grandchildren who adored their "Grandpa Johnson", Kaylee Duff, Candace Duff, and Brayden Duff of Summerville, S.C. He is grievously missed by his beloved dogs Solo and Pamela and his cats "the girls" Brownie and Goldie. His marriage to Vera Jean Harris ended in Divorce. A native Washingtonian, Maurice graduated from Sacred Heart Elementary School and Bell Multicultural High School 1968. He also attended City College. He was a rabid Washington Redskins fan. He enjoyed his travels to many cities in the continental US as well as Hawaii and Puerto Rico and Mexico. Maurice was proud of his military service in the U.S. Army from October 1968 to October 1971. His served in Viet Nam for one year. He was injured by shrapnel for which he was awarded a purple heart. He struggled successfully for the rest of his life with post traumatic stress syndrome. Maurice retired from his job as a painter with the General Services Administration in 1998. He was a careful and meticulous workman and received much recognition for his excellence. Maurice was a devoted lover of all animals. For example, when he found a small frog who had taken up residence in the garage, he became concerned about the frog's having enough food. From then on he bought crickets to turn loose in the garage so everybody frogs and crickets would have a chance of surviving.
