Leonard Coleman Jones

Leonard Coleman Jones was born on June 28, 1934, to Louis Thomas and Fragia Sebree Jones in the Mila Neck community of Wicomico in Northumberland County, VA. He transitioned to glory on May 15, 2024. Leonard grew up in Virginia with his sister Beatrice and brothers Louis Jr, Edward, Grafton, and Ulysses. After graduating from Julius Rosenwald High School in 1951, Leonard went on to attend St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, VA where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education in 1955. He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In 1956, Leonard was drafted int the US Army, where he trained at Fort Belvoir Engineer Center in Cartography. He was assigned to the 2nd Army Missile Command Headquarter under the General of Staff Plans and Operations Division. Leonard married Carrie Mae Edwards in 1960 after his service in the Army. Leonard and Carrie were married for over 60 years until her passing in 2021 and had four children, ten grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren Leonard was incredibly hard working and retired from the State of Maryland twice. Leonard valued education and learning - he believed both were the key to transforming an individual as well as the community at large. It is this love of learning and strong work ethic that led to his being awarded several certificates, awards, and distinctions in his lifetime including: The Dept. of Economic and Employment Development's Outstanding Service to the Citizens of Maryland Award Governor Schaeffer's Distinguished Service Award. In addition to his many accolades obtained for his work with the State of Maryland, Leonard loved sports - especially the Baltimore Orioles. He was also a Master Bowler, playing on several teams and leagues where he won countless trophies including taking home the Bronze Medal in Bowling at the Maryland Senior Olympics in 2012. Leonard was preceded in death by Louis and Fragia Jones (Parents), Louis Jr., Edward, Grafton, and Ulysses (Brothers), Carrie Edwards Jones (Wife), Alicia Hudson (daughter), and Bryan Henderson (Grandson). Leonard is survived by: Son, Reginald Jones of Baltimore, MD. His children: Marcus Jones and Ansel Jones. Daughter, Audrey Jordan of Goldsboro, NC. Her children: Jason Bronson (Vanessa), Tyra Jones Dickerson (Gerald), Ciara Jordan, and Lea Jordan. Daughter, Anita Jones of Owings Mills, MD. Her children: Dorian Brown and Erin Keri Jones. Grandchildren, Candace Hudson and Dominick Hudson. Leonard was loved and respected by many and will be missed by those who knew him and called him "Daddy," "Grandaddy", "Mr. Jones," and "Friend."
