In Loving Memory of Herbert Edward Holbert Monday, July 18, 2011 Viewing and Visitation - 10:00 A.M. Service - 10:30 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. Marshall-March Funeral Chapel 4217 Ninth Street, NW Washington, DC 20011 Rev. Robbie Wellington, Officiating Remembering Herbert Herbert Edward Holbert, of Washington, DC, departed his earthly life on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the age of 91 at home in the company of his family. Herbert was one of five children born April 23, 1920 to the late Floyd and Iva Holbert in Zanesville, OH. In the 1930’s, the family moved to Washington, DC. On May 23, 1942, like his father had done at the commencement of the United State’s involvement in World War I, Herbert enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country in World War II. As a Corporal, based in Frankfurt Germany, he came under enemy fire but continued to perform his duty in service to his country in time of war. On September 23, 1945, following the surrender of Germany and the end of the war in Europe, he was honorably discharged. Upon returning home from the war, Herbert began work in what was then the Pension Bureau in Washington, DC and there met the woman who would become his wife, Beulah Mae Jentons. He was particularly well-read, enjoying political, fiction, non-fiction, suspense and mystery books but most of all the Westerns. He also enjoyed many hobbies, especially fishing, but could never escape his family’s farming roots, which led to his passion for gardening. He took great pride in his prize tomatoes and beautiful zinnias. Herbert was physically fit, and maintained an exercise regimen well into his 80’s that included weight lifting and the treadmill. We can only speculate as to his likely living to and beyond the age of 100 had he not succumbed to lung cancer as a direct result of his cigarette addition. We, the family, suggest to all a fitting tribute to Herbert’s memory is for all his family and friends to quit smoking if you do, and to never start if you don’t! Thank you. His loving family includes his wife of 61 years, Beulah; children, Rotha Isabel Holbert Frye and Mark Andrew Holbert; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Edward Frye and Verice Marlaine Mason Holbert (deceased); grandchildren, Michelle, Matthew and Mark Holbert; his loving son, Lamont Holbert; his loving sons, and daughter, Herbert Kevin, Erin Antoinette, Steven Vincent, and Harry Cullen Holbert (deceased); his loving grandchildren, Mary Desiré (Tate), Kevin Miguel, Kitrea Cherelle and Cullen Anthony Holbert; his loving great grandchildren, Kemari Denise and Jasiah Harry Tate; his loving sisters and brother, Rotha Gwendolyn Holbert Erwin (deceased), Mary Isabel Holbert King (deceased), Rose Marie (deceased), and Harry Holbert, and brother-in-law, Howard Lawson Erwin; his loving niece, Linda Fay Erwin and many other loving relatives and friends.
