Gerald Jerome Russell Sr.

GERALD J. RUSSELL SR., or “Coach Russell” as he was affectionately known, devoted his life to family and educating the youth in the community. He never missed an opportunity to teach a life lesson and equip those around him with the tools to realize their dreams. His words of wisdom will live in the hearts of everyone he touched on and off the track. God called our father home after a courageous race against Alzheimer’s disease during the morning hours of July 18, 2024. God fulfilled His promise of no more pain, no more suffering or sorrow; He restored Gerald’s mind and body while granting him perfect peace and everlasting joy. Although we may not be able to see his face or hear his voice, we find peace in knowing GOD HAS YOU. With his race complete, Gerald, as a strong and steadfast fighter, went home to be with the Lord. Gerald Jerome Russell was born March 14, 1956, to the late Georgia Mae Russell and Lonnie James Russell in New York City, NY. Gerald’s natural athletic ability flourished in Track and Field during his fundamental years. As a result of his passion and dedication, Gerald won numerous awards and broke records at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, NY, and New York City. His name is still inscribed on the wall of his high school. That remains one of his greatest achievements during his early life. Gerald graduated from Lafayette High School in 1974. He attended Auburn University on a full athletic scholarship shortly after leaving high school. Motivated by a calling and with strength and tenacity he followed the path laid before him and became a Brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated in the spring of 1976. He completed his education at Morgan State University with dual degrees in Physical Education and Biology in 1981. God set in motion events that allowed Gerald to meet the love of his life, Bernadette M. Russell (Sessoms), via the Newman-Russell-Johnson Dental Office. His pursuit of knowledge led him back to Morgan State University, where he pursued a Master’s Degree along with numerous certifications and other educational accolades. During his career, Gerald served as a teacher, Night School Principal, and bedside educator for sick and infirm students. Although a gifted educator, his passion in life was love of family and Track and Field. Gerald was a legendary track and field coach in Baltimore County. He has directly influenced thousands of young men and women on the track to achieve professional and personal success while mentoring numerous educators and coaches in Maryland. During his tenure his teams earned numerous awards at the county and State Level during the late 1990s and early 2000s. During his 20+ year career, his wisdom has guided and shaped the lives of many. Beyond her profession and family life, Gerald loved the Lord and enjoyed life to its fullest. Gerald will be remembered for his colossal impact on his family, friends, and students. Gerald was united in holy matrimony to Bernadette Maria Russell (Sessoms) on August 4, 1984. Bernadette preceded him in death on August 31, 2022 to prepare for his arrival at their heavenly estate. He is also preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Lonnie “Butch” Russell and sister, Nellie “Tootsie” Taylor. He is survived by his four children, Gatina Dupont-Walker (Lamont), Darrell Dupont (Tracey), Gerald J Russell II (Kellie), Gerria Russell; one sister, Rosalind Blackwell (Walter/“Box”) and brother, Lionel Russell (Conchita). He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Ciarra Walker, Justin Walker, Landyn Walker, Lynaia Walker, Carter Dupont, Olivia Russell, and Owen Russell; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, beloved friends, students, athletes, and coworkers. God knew best, and He brought him home. His race of life was impactful and now he resides in perfect peace with our Heavenly Father. Today the family celebrates the homegoing of our beloved father, brother, and friend, Gerald Jerome Russell Sr.. Although we will surely miss you, God brings me comfort knowing that you are at perfect peace. So rest now, your battle is over, reside with your Father & Rest Easy knowing your memory and lessons will carry on in the lives you have touched. Love you, Pop!
